It's weird, the cultures between when I first joined and now are COMPLETELY different, and the newer SFers never went through the change |

I joined 4 years ago when the change was going on. A lot of the guys that left had been older and had a different humor then the new SFers. |
|
|
the change is very apparent
the type of content posted on this subforum has changed drastically, the people have obviously changed, the way people talk to each other has changed, the way content on this forum is discussed has changed
and it's not for the better which is really unfortunate but it is what it is

Man people like kevin and buckeye ruined this forum |

"Fewer threads about hockey"
THIS. I've noticed this a lot. Maybe because less SFers play in hockey leagues or a lot of them left/broadened horizons. |
|
|
ithe is correct, the SF WAS better when we had a lot of hockey discussion and SFer rivalries. just a correlation I guess... |

I'm new but I always try to talk to other SFers in a firm, yet respectful manner. I try to keep an eye on everything I post to make sure it isn't trash (and peeve people off, don't want that).
Overall I like the diversity here and hope to stay in this place until I move on. Pretty cool dudes here. |

We picked up a dime in Donald though he stays on topic and is a fun guy. PhiLCoke is also pro with baseball. There has been some good peeps among the ruff. |

Ro-sports:
In 2010, the front page would literally be all ro-sports threads. There would be AT LEAST 5 leagues running at a time, all run on the SF. If you were an SFer, at least half of your time was spent in game either playing, reffing, or watching ro-sports. Now, the only SF league is RNCAA. A big reason for this was the addition of groups, and as they became more complex and grew in popularity, leagues like RHL, RAAAHL, RFL, and others started to become so powerful that SF leagues struggled to survive with many SFers choosing to play in the bigger, better leagues. Many SFers also left the SF completely, most notably in RFL, with big losses such as zim347, wsd906, TChapman, passmaster, the list goes on.
Culture:
The SF's average age might seem pretty young now, but it was a lot younger before. I joined when I was 10 or 11, and the average age was probably 12. The humor was a lot different, there was VERY little "trolling" and if you did troll, you were actually shunned by the community. There was a great feeling of comradery, and it was quite obvious who an "SFer" was. Around 2012-14 the community grew older together and the humor began to change as people grew in age.
Thread topics:
Back in 2010, I kid you not, a lot of people truly talked about real life sports. You could have decent discussion--not that you can't now, but back then everybody was knowledgeable about what went on irl. 2011-14 saw the rise of "off topic" posting, where more posts about life began to make their way into the culture of the SF.
Real life personalities:
In 2010 the majority of SFers played sports irl. They came to the sports forum because they wanted to play sports online when they weren't playing irl. I'd say a lot of people still play sports irl now, but it's not nearly as big of a percentage as it was 6 years ago. This has contributed to a drastic change in culture.
Expanding on Ithe's comments:
From 2011-14, the SF continued to grow. People might have complained "old SF was better" each year, but the SF was growing and becoming increasingly active. When the summer of 2014 hit though, many SFers started to graduate high school, and more and more veteran SFers continue to leave every year. At this point, we are losing veteran SFers much faster than we are gaining them.
Yes, back in 2012-13, hockey was undeniably the favorite sport of the SF at the height of the RHL.
There are much less "bitter rivalries" between SFers these days because there is much less comradery to begin with. Everyone used to know each other so well we got on each other's nerves simply by being around each other too much. Now, if there is a fight, there isn't nearly as much passion put into it. Many, including myself, used to get VERY mad. And I mean, EXTREMELY mad, going on major rants on the front page. You simply don't see that anymore. |

Go play Rugby on Ice with LBM. |

i remember when i was new here i felt like i had to prove myself to the sf. i got bashed on my introductory thread just because
i got into heated, multi-page arguments with regularity.
those were good times. |

One major thing I forgot to mention was there was more "authority" back in 2011-14. If you were an older SFer or popular league owner, you had a lot of power both in game and on the forum. I really am not trying to toot my own horn here, but myself, Scarsonbrodway, RedDawg, among others, had a lot of control over settling disputes and helping integrate new SFers into the community. Now, there is no authority, the SF is mostly just a collection of sports fans who are about on equal pedastal.
Another major thing is SF Parties. Holy crap how could I forget SF parties. I'll let someone else explain this but my god, the culture is SO DIFFERENT than it was 3-4 years ago |
|
|
i mean things really got heated.
and this applies to me as well as everyone: there were extremely passionate arguments about sports as well as things outside of sports; topics. personal attacks were launched with regularity, but they were legitimate and not just pathetic troll attempts.
i personally thought it was better that way |
