hmmmm both are good, but I inch toward Mario due to his more constancy for good games and a more better reputation that poor ole sonic sorta lost.
Sonic games are still great (usually), but lately has been going to weird direction with recent titles (as well as having a "dark age") .... than there is the fan base.... oh lord. |

Depends I guess, I say Mario is a lot more consistent with making good games, but Sonic has him beat in the character design and personality department. |

Eh I gotta disagree with that one, Sonic 3&K was easily the best Sonic game in my opinion. Plus 2 and 1 were still pretty solid. |

Mario:
consistently good to great games
doesn't experiment too often (aside from the recent games)
has voice acting that doesn't make me want to stab a porcupine
Waluigi is a thing
Sonic:
experiments all the time
games range from being terrible to stellar
the voice acting makes we want to murder a porcupine

Sonic, as a character I like him more. He actually has a personality, heck he even has multiple comic book series about him. He also would win in a fight. Sure Mario has his fire flower and star power, but sonic has the ability to fly and shoot epic beams from his hands. But if we are talking about franchise's Mario has the upper hand. Now that Sega is a third party developer they can't be biased toward Nintendo. All those SEGA vs Nintendo commercials back in the 90s was what gave SEGA its popularity. Mario is also a much more well-known character due to the fact Mario is a part of a giant company that dominates's in games and consoles. And when you are playing a Mario game, you don't really get a sense of reward when you beat a level. It's just "I have to get to the end and beat the game". But with Sonic game's you can have fun when playing a level. Boosting extremely fast, bashing into enemies, exploding enemies, doing looptey loops, what more could you want from a game? And Mario has no real "Special form" that only he can do. Sure star power but any character can do that. Sonic, however, has multiple forms that only he can do. His Super Sonic Form *Named after him*. He also has Dark Sonic, Hyper Sonic, Darkspine Sonic, Excalibur Sonic, Werewolf Sonic, and Fleetway Sonic. So from all this, I'm pretty sure we can agree Sonic is a better character. (P.S, You may be wondering who Fleetway sonic is, he is a different super form of sonic. One time when Sonic was going Super in the comic's he got possessed by a demon which made him go Fleetway sonic. It's basically a much more psychotic version of sonic that wants to kill everyone.)
