PVT: To attain the rank of E1 Private, you must enlist in the United States Marine Corps. PFC: A Private First Class is most often promoted from Private (PVT), although promotion from lower paygrades may occur with sufficient display of leadership and experience. To attain the rank of E2 Private First Class, you must graduate from Recruit Training. LCPL: A Lance Corporal is most often promoted from Private First Class (PFC), although promotion from lower paygrades may occur with sufficient display of leadership and experience. All Marines are guarenteed this rank with increase of activity, another way to earn the rank of LCPL is an honor graduation, where you're the top of your class, the Instructor may decide to promote you to Lance Corporal instead of Private First Class. CPL: A Corporal is most often promoted from Lance Corporal (LCpl), although promotion from lower paygrades may occur with sufficient display of leadership and experience. All marines are guarenteed a promotion to CPL if they increase their activity and successfully complete an MOS test. SGT: A Sergeant is most often promoted from Corporal (Cpl), although promotion from lower paygrades may occur with sufficient display of leadership and experience. Promotions occur with an increase of activity on base and in your MOS. SSGT: A Staff Sergeant is most often promoted from Sergeant (Sgt), although promotion from lower paygrades may occur with sufficient display of leadership and experience. Promotions occur with an increase of activity on base and in your MOS. All Sergeants are required to submit a Letter/Message to the Chief of Staff when a Review Boards is approaching, once the Message is accepted, the Sergeant must show up to the Review Boards, once passing the board, a promotion is 95% guarenteed. GYSGT: A Gunnery Sergeant is most often promoted from Staff Sergeant (SSgt), although promotion from lower paygrades may occur with sufficient display of leadership and experience. Each marine must show an increase of activity on base and in your MOS, completion of the Staff NCO Training is required. MSGT: A Master Sergeant is most often promoted from Gunnery Sergeant (GySgt), although promotion from lower paygrades may occur with sufficient display of leadership and experience. Certain marines will be given the choice of promotion if they have an increase in activity on base and in your MOS. 1stSGT: A First Sergeant is most often promoted from Master Sergeant (MSgt), although promotion from lower paygrades may occur with sufficient display of leadership and experience. All MSGTs who want a promotion to 1stSGT is required to submit a Letter/Message to the Chief Staff when a Review Board is approaching, once the Message is accepted the Master Sergeant must show up to the Review Board, once passing the board, a promotion is 80% guarenteed. MGYSGT: A Master Gunnery Sergeant is most often promoted from First Sergeant (1stSg), although promotion from lower paygrades may occur with sufficient display of leadership and experience. All MSGTs and 1stSGTs who want a promotion to MGYSGT is required to submit a Letter/Message to the Chief Staff when a Review Board is approaching, once the Message is accepted the Master Sergeant/First Sergeant must show up to the Review Board, once passing the board, a promotion is 60% guarenteed. SGTMAJ: A Sergeant Major is most often promoted from Master Gunnery Sergeant (MGySg), although promotion from lower paygrades may occur with sufficient display of leadership and experience. All 1stSGTs and GYSGTs who want a promotion to SGTMAJ is required to submit a Letter/Message to the Chief Staff when a Review Board is approaching, once the Message is accepted the First Sergeant/Master Gunnery Sergeant must show up to the Review Board, once passing the board, a promotion is 40% guarenteed. SGTMAJMC: Sergeant Major Of The Marine Corps is a special / ceremonial rank, so promotions don't occur in the same way as with a a traditional Marine Corps rank promotion.
