2LT: A Second Lieutenant is most often promoted from Chief Warrant Officer 5 (CW5), although promotion from lower paygrades may occur with sufficient display of leadership and experience. Anyone who's the rank of Corporal+ and applying to become an Officer must pass 2 trainings, first is the Platoon Leader's Course (PLC) once passing that you'll have to take Stage 2, Officer Candidate School (OCS), once passing that, you'll be promoted to 2LT, 100% guarenteed. 1LT: A First Lieutenant is always promoted from Second Lieutenant (2ndLt). 2ndLts are all but guaranteed to promote to 1stLt with an increase of activity. CAPT: A Captain is most often promoted from First Lieutenant (1stLt), although promotion from lower paygrades may occur with sufficient display of leadership and experience. 1stLts are all but guaranteed to promote to Captain with an increase in activity. MAJ: A Major is most often promoted from Captain (Capt), although promotion from lower paygrades may occur with sufficient display of leadership and experience. Unlike an Officer's first two career promotions, achieving the rank of Major is competitive, with roughly 80% of Captains progressing forward. For any given community, the Officer must submit an application, once eligible, to an approval board. They must qualitatively demonstrate a history of strong leadership. LTCOL: A Lieutenant Colonel is most often promoted from Major (Maj), although promotion from lower paygrades may occur with sufficient display of leadership and experience. Like an Officer's promotion to Major, achieving the rank of Lieutenant Colonel is competitive, with only 70% of Majors progressing forward. The Officer must submit an application, once eligible, to an approval board. They must qualitatively demonstrate a history of strong leadership in assignments both teaching and leading. COL: A Colonel is most often promoted from Lieutenant Colonel (LtCol), although promotion from lower paygrades may occur with sufficient display of leadership and experience. Like an Officer's promotions to Major and LtCol, achieving the rank of Colonel is competitive, with only 50% of LtCols progressing forward. The Officer must submit an application, once eligible, to an approval board. They must qualitatively demonstrate a history of strong leadership in assignments both leading and teaching. BGEN: A Brigadier General is most often promoted from Colonel (Col), although promotion from lower paygrades may occur with sufficient display of leadership and experience. To attain a Flag Officer rank, you must send an application to the "4-star General Board" where the 4-Star Generals, the Chief of Staff and the Commander in Chief will discuss your qualifications to attain this rank. Promotion rate is 35%. MGEN: A Major General is most often promoted from Brigadier General (BGen), although promotion from lower paygrades may occur with sufficient display of leadership and experience. This rank is a requested rank by any Flag Officer the rank of Major General+. Once the Chief of Staff gets the request, she/he will study the Brigadier General's qualification and make the dicision. Promotion rate is 20%. LTGEN: A Lieutenant General is most often promoted from Major General (MGen), although promotion from lower paygrades may occur with sufficient display of leadership and experience. This rank is a requested rank by any Flag Officer the rank of Lieutenant General+. Once the Chief of Staff gets the request, she/he will study the Major General's qualification and make the dicision. Promotion rate is 10%. GEN: A General is most often promoted from Lieutenant General (LtGen), although promotion from lower paygrades may occur with sufficient display of leadership and experience. This rank is a requested rank by any Flag Officer the rank of General+. Once the Chief of Staff gets the request, she/he will study the General's qualification and make the dicision. Promotion rate is 5%. COS: A Chief of Staff is most often promoted from General (Gen), but although promotion from lower paygrades may occur with sufficient display of leadership and experence.
