why would you learn mandarin chinese over real chinese (ie taiwanese) anyway?

Mandarin chinese is a dialect known by a lot of people in mainland China -- native in Beijing and it's often learned as a secondary language in many other parts of mainland China
I plan on going to mainland China for a few years during some point in my life

Not to mention, the majority of Taiwanese people *DO* learn Mandarin
So if I ever wanted to visit that cool mountain they have (玉山/yushan) I'd probably be able to communicate with at LEAST 1 person

Okay so I just did a bit of research
Mandarin is known by MOST younger people by this point. HOWEVER, some cities in southern Taiwan still use different dialects

So even though tons of different dialects exist, the fact is that even people who use different dialects often still know Mandarin because it's pretty much the lingua franca of Chinese people
