"18:02 windowshasyou : robeph: Word of advice... don't do that in a coffee shop with a cop sitting behind and getting more than a little curious as to what you are doing...
18:03 robeph : hahahah
18:03 windowshasyou : robeph: yeah yeah laugh now... just wait till it happens to you. That wasn't a very pleasant experience.
18:03 robeph : hahahah
18:04 robeph : I don't go to cafes
18:04 + marens : windowshasyou: what happened?
18:05 windowshasyou : marens: Basically, I got put into cuffs while he waited for some tech from their crime labs to show up and examine the laptop for "cyber crimes"
18:05 windowshasyou : marens: Welcome to Amerika. May I see your papers, please?
18:05 windowshasyou * says that in a chinese accent.
18:06 + marens : windowshasyou: because of portage output?
18:06 robeph : hahaha
18:06 windowshasyou : marens: yep."
GOD IF THIS IS ALL IT TAKES FOR A (DUMB) COP TO GET FIRED
IMAGINE COMPILING THE KERNEL WITH VERBOSE OUTPUT
YOU'LL HAVE BASH OPEN FOR **HOURS**
"Edit 10/04/2011 Heres the details that people were asking for.
I was detained for around 9 hours that day.
Most of it was spent waiting in a police interrogation room.
No I didn't get to talk to the tech, but I found out later that they thought I was running some sort of special encryption because their windows machines couldn't read ext3.
Long story short, for the last 4 hours of that ordeal, I had some fat, smelly, detective with powdered sugar on his shirt screaming at me to admit I was cracking some server.
In the end, someone competent recognized that it was Linux with KDE. Shortly after that, I was booted out the door.
I spoke to an attorney the next day over that. I filed suit for civil rights violations and ended up settling for a small sum and the knowledge that the patrol man that started the mess and the detective had been fired. "
