"New York Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis, a multi-time All-Pro and Pro Bowl selection, is facing felony charges stemming from an early-morning street altercation on the South Side last weekend.
An online docket shows that Revis was charged Thursday night with aggravated assault, robbery, tayrurristic threats and conspiracy. The 31-year-old Aliquippa native is not in custody, and it's unclear if he is still in Pennsylvania.
Attorney B. Jones said he would contact police to arrange for Revis to turn himself in: "He's not going to run from a warrant."
Police issued the following statement:
"On Sunday, February 12 at approximately 2:43 a.m., Zone 3 Officers were dispatched to S. 23rd and E. Carson streets for a report that two males had been knocked unconscious. According to the investigation, a 22-year-old male from Kittanning was walking along E. Carson Street when he spotted a male who resembled Aliquippa native Darrelle Revis, a cornerback in the NFL. He asked if ### man was Darrell Revis and he confirmed that he was. ### male began recording ### interaction on his cellphone and continued following Revis. At some point, Revis snatched the cellphone away and attempted to delete the video. Another 21-year-old male from Ross Township attempted to help the 22-year-old retrieve the cellphone. Revis then tossed the phone onto the roadway. A verbal argument followed. A male came to assist Revis. Both the 22-year-old and the 21-year-old state they were punched then remember waking up to talk to police. Witnesses state the two were unconscious for about 10 minutes. The officers viewed the cellphone video and confirmed that the person was Revis."
Both of the injured men were taken to the hospital, and one of them suffered broken bones around his eye, sources close to the investigation say.
Reached by phone Thursday night, one of the alleged victims declined to comment about the Revis incident. He also said "no comment" when asked about his current physical condition.
Lydia Watt said her brother, Nathan Watt, an IUP student, was with the ### alleged victims but was not struck during the ###ident.
"He was with two of his buddies down in the South Side over the weekend, and I see a ######## of his friend laying in a hospital bed," she said. "I immediately texted him and said, 'What is (your friend) doing in a hospital bed?' He said, 'Darrelle Revis knocked him out.'"
Jones told a different story, claiming that Revis is the one who was assaulted.
"He was not the aggressor that night. He was 1,000 percent the victim," Jones said. "He tried to retreat. He did everything in his power to try to get this situation to die down, to de-escalate this situation that the other group started. Darrelle was by himself when he was physically assaulted by one of the men, and unfortunately, at what point in time do you say enough is enough?"
When asked if Revis threw any punches, Jones said, "All I can tell you is that if any punches were thrown, they were thrown in self-defense, but Darrelle did not initiate any of the physical contact. Do you think Darrelle Revis would go down to the South Side and start throwing punches?"
Revis had come to Pittsburgh for a visit with family and friends, and he went to the South Side to look at a property that he is in the process of developing, Jones said." |
