The manager realizes after they’ve left the counter that they have paid too much (turns out ### ##### ### ### three rooms should have been only $25), and he sends ### bellboy up to their rooms with $5 to make things right (what an honest hotel manager). Unfortunately, though, ### bellboy doesn’t know how to split five one-dollar bills between three men, so he pockets $2 and gives each of ### men a dollar back. This means that instead of paying $10 each, now each man has paid only $9. 9x3=27. The bellboy has only $2. 27+2=29. Where is the other dollar? The mathematics is wrong, there is no missing dollar. Because after getting $1 back, the three men had paid a total of $27 for their room ($9 each), not $30. With $27, ### hotel has $25 and ### ##### #### ### remaining $2. If you still want to work from ### ######## #### ### ### #### ### ### hotel has $25 and ### bellboy has $2. The mathematical error is adding the bellboy’s $2 to the $27 when it should subtract instead.
