Welcome, Residents! You will be starting this residency out with your internship (unless excused). I wish you the best of luck throughout your residency as it will not be easy. We will begin to inform you about several things you need to know throughout your residency. [INTERNS SHOULD KNOW:] Every intern should be expected to know how to start an IV (intravenous) line. Every intern should know how to run a code. Every intern is expected to know how to run a plan for a patient. This is your goal as an intern to learn these things. You WILL be tested after a week of your internship about these things. If you pass this test, you'll be able to become a second year resident (PGY-2). [SECOND YEAR POST-GRADUATES SHOULD KNOW (PGY-2):] Every second year post-graduate should know how to do a central line. Every second year should be able to do what an intern can do. You'll be required to study at least 5 minutes every shift with someone lower, and higher than you. It can be a resident. [THIRD YEAR POST-GRADUATES SHOULD KNOW (PGY-3):] Every third year should be able to do what a second year can. By this year, you'll have to be able to do a medial incision properly. You'll also have to be able to know what surgical instruments to use for each surgery. You'll also be tested how to insert a chest tube properly. You will be required to study at least 5 minutes each shift with someone lower, and higher than you are. It can be a resident. [FOURTH YEAR POST-GRADUATES SHOULD KNOW (PGY-4):] Every fourth year should be able to do what a third year post-graduate can do. You'll be required to know how to properly insert a femoral line. You'll be required to learn how to do an appendectomy, diagnose certain diseases (or genetic disorders), and how to properly choose what anesthetics to use. While using anti-septics' (sterilizers), you must know what to use for each procedure (that includes a femoral line, central line, intravenous, etc). You'll be required to study 5 minutes with a Fellow+ each shift. [FIFTH YEAR POST-GRADUATES SHOULD KNOW (PGY-5):] Every fifth year post-graduates should be able to do every task listed for (PGY-1 to PGY-5). That is a requirement with no exceptions. Every fifth year will pick a specialty within the hospital categories. After one week of being a fifth year post-graduate, you'll be entered into your Board Certification state. You will be tested on your specialty. Out of the two cases you will be tested on, you must get one correct, with mostly the other case correct (minimal with no exceptions). [NON-SURGICAL PGY-1 TO PGY-5 RESIDENTS:] If you are non-surgical whether it is Anesthesiology, whether it is psychiatry, you will be required to know what a surgical PGY-2 knows. Afterward, you will not proceed how the rest of the surgical interns will be. You will be required to know how to diagnose a certain disorder (or genetic disorder). You will be required to know what anesthetics to use for every case. [ALL TESTS:] If you do not pass this test for each year (PGY-1 to PGY-5), you'll be given 7 more days to study for a retake test. If you happen to fail again, you'll be kicked out of the residency program. Congratulations, you have finally completed your residency. You will now be entering your fellowship. We wish you luck throughout your fellowship. You will not be tested for your Attending Physician position. If we seek you are worthy enough to become an Attending, you will receive the position.
