FIRST ADDRESS
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
2 FEBRUARY 1911
It is my honor to make the first address as Leader of the Liberal Party.
The Liberal Party is a staunch advocate of racial, cultural, and religious equality and stands strong against the xenophobes. There are two types of nationalism:
a. Ethnic nationalism - A nationalism built upon a common ethnic and lingual group.
b. Civic nationalism - A nationalism built upon a shared set of common values---like liberty, brotherhood, freedom, and democracy---irrespective of race, religion, or creed.
The Liberal Party is proud to hew to option B, civic nationalism. We believe that the people of PNG should be bonded not by race or religion but rather a common appreciation of similar social and moral values---equality, liberty, and so on.
TO CONCLUDE, I make here a call to nationalism: a wiser, greater, fairer society bonded upon rational and intellectual values rather than antiquated and unscientific racial hatreds. We must all work together to reject xenophobia and work toward the common good of all human beings.
Signed,
Lucio Edralin Emmanuel Marcos
