I want to display thousands of selectable stars for a teleporter, with tooltips that pop up when your mouse is near them. Preferrably in a sphere around the teleporter.

Well, there's no definite way to "stop" lag, but you can't prevent some of it; Since you want to add stars, I recommend usin as few as possible. Dw if less will make it look bad, because it doesn't: Look at some old games, they have less part, yet they're majestic and awesome. :)

The problem is that I intend for the stars to represent all the places that the portal knows there are similar portals in. They're not decorative.

Like, with GUI elements? By the way, are screen depth displacements possible with GUI elements, or layering in front of or behind parts? When a portal is activated, I want a black circle to appear that blocks everything except for the portal and the stars that will probably be GUI elements.

Tbh, your idea reminds me of Raging Blast 2. lol (If you don't know, look up the galaxy mode or watch some gameplay, and you'll understand what I'm talkin about.)

They need to be arranged in 3D, not 2D.
