china is ahead of the US in gdp, though behind in gdp per capita the average wealth of US citizens is very high, compared to many countries, including russia. and, the national debt does matter, though like you said, not as much as one may think. however, all citizens will have to pay off that debt. that will assist in tearing the country apart when that time comes, as policy making will obviously have to change in order to begin lowering the debt, rather than increasing it further
