You see, when an original species gets split in half by a large barrier and is forced to be separated into two different populations, they start to evolve separately. If left to live and multiplay separated from the rest of the species long enough, they gradually will become a separate, new, species.
The hel gh ast are like that, but they have only been separated for around 300 years, give or take 100. This is not long enough to make them a new species. Hell, its not long enough to get them to start looking different but this is a game so I'll let the designers slide. They are definitely part of the same genus as humans, omoh backwards , but whether they are sapiens as well is less clear. In the first game, Hakha was a half hel gh ast half human. Since the two species are able to mate, they lends evidence to them being the same species, however its never revealed if Hak ha is f e r t i l e or infertile. If he is f e r t i l e, then the hel gh ast are the same species, just a different "race" or possibly "breed" if you choose to think along those terms.
