Everywhere you go, there's always a plethora of people who idolize certain artists for whatever reason they want. That's fine, I guess. But it's not fine if all they ever listen to is the same five or so artists and are ignorant to other genres(or other artists for that matter). I took a little survey-thing, and here's the most common result:
"So uh... What's you're favorite musician?"
"[insert generic band here]"
"Cool. So have you ever heard Genesis? Cream? Iron Butterfly? The Doors? King Crimson? The Who? Janis Joplin? Led Zeppelin? Bob Dylan? David Bowie? Steppenwolf? The Human League? Van Morrison? The Rolling Stones? ELO? Blue Oyster Cult?"
"No."
Maybe the people I know are just stupid, but I'm seeing this more and more. In fact I expect it now. If you're going to claim knowledge of music, I would at least expect you to have at least heard of Steppenwolf or own "In the Wake of Poseidon". But no. That'll never happen.
"Ooh. I love Sepultra. Ooh. I love Lady Gaga. Ooh. I love the Black Eyed Peas..."
"Yeah, well, get some ABBA, dammit."
But I'm not declaring music superiority. God no. I'm just mad at the fact that people won't go out of their way to listen to the music that came before their time. Stuff besides pop. But do whatever you want I guess. I just won't like your musical ignorance(if you're one of those people). I mean, I'm trying to broaden my horizons every day. I own 200+ albums, I've heard way more than that, I've listened to 200+ artists(which a ton aren't on my last.fm for some reason. I think my Scrobbler is messed up), have tried to hit every genre, I've... GAH! You get the idea. |

THANK YOU
i just hate when people listen to pop/metal/rap or any big genre with mainstream recognition and or popularity, without having explored the much more obscure/neglected genres.
same goes if they only listen to the bigs of the genre, eg
metal: metallica and megadeth are really just the bigs of metal, and i cant stand it when people just listen to the bigs of the genre and dont bother to actually sculpt their tastes more by digging into the subgenres that are fairly neglected, and even the more obscure bands of the genre: mayhem, burzum, and several others
if they like the genre and all im comfortable with that but seriously, if they like music so much they should atleast try out all the genres, pick out the ones they love the most, and listen to the bigs first, then dig to the obscurities within

@Waffles
Well, Megadeth isn't really one of the generic metal bands. |
|
|
i was referring to them as if they were one of the more out-there ones of their genre
metallica is arguably the most out-there metal band |
|
|
EXACTLY, i hate when people come up to me and tell me they like pop or rap or whatever, but the only listen to 1 thing. |
|
|
People need to dig deeper for more music. |

Does anyone even know about Civil Twilight or Death From Above 1917? |

I think I know Civil Twilight. |

The only problem is, there's so much music, you can't expect people to know everything about everything. And what if it doesn't take me long to find my favorite artist? I mean, I'm listening to everything (and I mean EVERYTHING) and I still like David Bowie the best, although I am finding more and more bands that I like such as Hawkwind, the Smiths, Metallica (I didn't listen to much metal before this), the Clash, Arcade Fire, and even non-rock and metal bands like Daft Punk. |

I know that no-one will ever be able to hear it all, but I'm frustrated that people's knowledge only goes as far as a few bands because they don't try to listen to more. Like how my favorite band is(currently) The Rolling Stones. I listen to them a lot, but I still make time for others. Just because one has a favorite artist but finds it realatively quick doesn't mean that he's one of the breed I mentioned above. But if he stops looking for music as soon as he finds a favorite, then yes. He is. |

You can always just help your friends find music. If you just say "Roxy Music (or some other obscure band) is awesome!" and they don't already know what it is they just might listen to it. |

No. They won't. Trust me on that. |

Lesson: Do not judge other people on what you do. Well, how about you just play the music for them? If someone's favorite song is a catchy pop song, I pick the catchiest song by *insert artist you think they'd like here* and show it to them. If it's a heavy metal song, pick the heaviest song by *insert artist you think they'd like here*. Well, there's more to it, like there are some things they don't like stylistically or lyrically that you might want to avoid, but it kind of works. I showed a random pop fan with little musical knowledge "Heathen (The Rays)" - David Bowie because I noticed that they like emotional stuff that they can relate to, and they replied with "awesome". |

^ Thst's not why I made this thread. I'm not judging people by their musical ignorance either. |
