Simply that, a way to copyprotect our models as a second line of defense against place and model stealing exploiters.
I find it depressing that Roblox as a building game, doesn't have this feature already. The fact that I can spend hours day after day on a place or a model, then have an exploiter steal it and release it on free models (or worse, claim he/she made it, take credit for it and make tix/robux off it). What's worse, Roblox - looking at the catalog, will do absolutely nothing. Again worse, to my knowledge, if you take a stolen model and use it as your place, YOU AREN'T BREAKING THE RULES. You seriously might as well uncopylock your place if you annoy an exploiter.
I understand exploits can be patched, but more will inevitably be discovered, publicized and used. Patching exploits alone is NOT a reliable system of copy protection.
Here's what I'm suggesting:
In addition to continuously patching exploits, create a Copyright-style system in which places reported for plagerism are checked against anything on a long list of existing places that was uploaded before them. Obviously some maps - such as Happy Home in Robloxia - would not be considered in this list. All places and models uploaded are automatically placed on this list. If a place fails this check (which simply runs through the objects in the place and checks for similar properties in large structures) - one of several things happens:
Terms:
- Place A - The place BEING checked to see if it plagerizes.
- Place B - The place that might be being plagerized.
If Place B is set to be uncopylocked, Place A gets an addition to it's page on the website saying it used (with permission) content from Place B.
If Place B is set to be copylocked, but Place A was taken when Place A was uncopylocked, it gets the same addition.
If Place B is set to be copylocked, and place A was NOT taken when Place B is uncopylocked - a report is sent to the mods to confirm that Place B was taken illigitimatly (by looking at server records); if it was, Place A is deleted and the user is banned for exploitation.
NOTE: SIMILAR places are OK - If you reconstruct a place by sight you're probably going to change enough to not trip the system.
Constructive Critism is welcome. If you don't support, say why. |

Alternate for the automatic system deciding to send a report for the mod:
The plagerizing place is given to the Roblox community to vote (similar to the way contests work, but they would not be informed which place was which) if 1 place copied the other. |

Support. |

Oh, so if I make "Pokemon Arena" and make it original, then I won't get trampled on for taking an idea I thought was cool and tried to build on it?
Support for now. |

@Thenoob
Whether or not this idea is made - that could be against the rules.
The Copyright law in real life still applies. Nintendo owns the copyright for Pokemon and could theoretically order Roblox to remove your place. |

That was the best idea I've seen in a while.
Epick support. |
|
|
...
But then that would mean that people will start getting on eachother for making zombie games, because you said that getting inspired by other works is against the rules you made.
Support lost. |

I said SIMILAR places are OK.
IDENTICAL (or Just-Changed-One-Thing) places are what's bad.
And the Copyright Law applies whether or not this idea passes. |
|
|
Thats the part I am concerned about, is that it seems like the line between similar and copied can deviate. |

-.-
The only places this would apply to would be places that, when you looked around, were IDENTICAL or changed so little that you can't (or can barely) tell the difference between the original and the copy without a thorough exam.
Obviously it's going to be subjective and it will depend on the mod. Some will have greater tolerance and other will have less.
Just like the rule about being mean.
I've seen a supermod call someone an idiot.
I've seen admins that are apperenlt incapable of being rude. |

And I do understand that the system would be imperfect. But anything is better than nothing. It's a logical fallacy to state that if it's not 100% effective it's not worth being done. At the moment we have nothing - this would be much better than nothing.
Actually, not only do we have nothing, a lot of us probably have the (somewhat correct if I remember one mod's twitter correctly) impression the admins don't care about our assets being copied. |

Ok, so proxyworm and whoever else that copies, would finally get in trouble for their copying?
proxyworm copyed Zombocalypse 2 and published it. Just so you know. |

Precisely, they'd get in trouble and those that copied. |
|
|
The copied places that get published will get elimitated from Roblox so that they won't spread, right? |
|
swmaniacJoin Date: 2008-06-28 Post Count: 15773 |
If they get reported, right. |
|
|
um i dont think roblox will do that becuase what happens if other poeple make the ezact same thing and didnt know about yours? it will create problems roblox wouldnt need |

All i read was this part: Simply that, a way to copyprotect our models as a second line of defense against place and model stealing exploiters. And No. |

Do you have any idea how unbelivably unlikely that is to ever happen?
Not to mention, the Mods would check server logs to make sure that you even downloaded the place (by visiting it or through exploits) in the first place.
At worst, it would get to the report stage; the mods would say that you didn't steal it. |

@Void
Your opinion is invalid because you only read the first sentence AND you didn't post any problems with it.
Period. |
|
|
dude for someone to make a ezact same model and not know YOU made it is very likely it mostlikly happens everyday and the guy gets flamed and called a copyer becuase of it copywiting is only ganna cripple the amount of new models being made either copyed or achualy made by the creator who doesnt know that there is another model just like that then if that happens he may find roblox to be alittle boring becuase he cant build his own stuff due to others who copywrite it |

That entire post made absolutely no sense.
In anyway, shape or form.
It's rediculously unlikely that in any large and complex place, EVERY SINGLE THING WOULD BE THE SAME ACCIDENTLY.
I'm not talking about a 3 brick see-saw. I'm talking about a 3,000 brick map.
The odds of two people making 2 maps so similar that human mods and automatic systems can't tell them apart is astronomical.
And even then, at WORST - they would get reported, the mods would see that they had never gone to the place or downloaded the model, and the mods would ignore the report. |
