The reason why Japanese characters are very similar is because the Japanese adopted many characters from the Chinese. It can be a bit confusing, but the differences are quite noticeable. Anyhow, an example... 和 (he) In Chinese means "and". (Ex. 你和我)<-- You and I. 和 In Japanese means harmony. How they pronounce it is nothing I'm concerned about.

@Troyg: From Denshi Jisho: 和 わ 1: sum; 2: harmony; peace; (Prefix) 3: Japanese-style Common word, Noun 和 やわ poorly-built; weak; insubstantial

Well, the word 和 are same at most meanings between Chinese and Japanese. Japanese are called 大和民族 , that's why 和 means Japanese style. Example: 和室 (Chinese) means a room built in Japanese style. 和平 means peace in Chinese, so 和 means peace in Japanese.
