i don't like the age selector! bring back 'over 13' or 'under 13'

And when I (not this account) joined there wasn't even an age thing. All there really was in that category was safe-chat, which could be toggled in the profile settings.

All it tells them is your age. So they know "A 12 yr old" or "A 5790838 yr old". However it doesn't give you any information besides that so there is no security risk whatsoever. It's just idiots overreacting to things that shouldn't even be given any mind.
