Not everyone looks at something they don't know, looks it up on Google and read it in wikipedia.
Really though. You can say the same thing about Rome, or Assyria, or the Mongols, or any fairly large empire. Assyria systematically flogged, impaled, tortured, and a few other nasty stuff which I will not post before finally beheading them, and then tossing the heads in a pile, which I believe they burned.
Rome just conquered, conquered, and conquered. They slaughtered several civilizations, and despite having brought roads and aqueducts and what-not, they did a few things that might seem a trifle harsh - after the 3rd Punic War, Rome tore Carthage to the ground and salted its fields, and after 4,000 (maybe 3,000) Spanish soldiers surrendered with the promise of being let go, were then massacred by orders of the Senate.
Let's not turn this into a history lesson though. My point is, you really have to look deep into these ancient empires to find out how bad they really were. From a distance, a lot of these civilizations don't look so bad, and that's what's happening with Vlad the Impaler - no one's looking him up. Just forget about it. |
