@ gokussj100: Modern rap doesn't express anything anymore. It's just bragging. Old rap (Run DMC, Tupac Shakur, Dr. Dre) had a message, and were awesome.

Agreed. Mainstream rap is just some guy talking about how cool he is(n't). I can't stand when the song is just the artist bragging about him/herself. BTW, I think when they say about the "Yo yo homies," and whatever, I don't think they're being racist, I think they're just talking about the subculture as a whole, which includes all races.

Today,they don't express themselves. All they sing about is well, adult content.
'Crank Dat' was an epic fail, I don't want to hear adult content in a song without meaning.
Thats why 3 Doors Down beats the whole Rap genre, they don't sing about themselves a lot. They make songs that have meaning, for example in the 'Kryptonite' " I left my body lying somewhere in the sands of time" meaning he got older. They even made a song for the National Guard. Has any present time rappers? Non that I have heard of. |

Strange. You think that Soulja Boy does rap. It isn't normal rap though. NO type of rap other than that done by Soulja Boy contains such a high level of phail. Also, must I post those four people again?
311: Sure, they talk about themselves sometimes, but their lyrics are, many times, very philosophical. Other times, it's just "You're really annoying me", but, hey, it's not conceited.
Rage Against the Machine: I call it rap. Heavily political, not proclaiming messages of violence but showing the world that it's there, and not sugarcoating the world.
CAKE: Strange, strange stuff. Mostly storytelling.
Noz: Like Rage. Look at Stephen Colbert's interview with him.
Not ALL rap is bad. A lot of it, yeah, but not all. |

Idc though its not my fault people want to be racist to "african american people" (which is the proper term) just because rap has hit an wall. besides people dont rap that much anymore. if you listen to songs on a different station it will play mostly r and b songs that have chris brown, t-pain, kanye west, etc which is not rap. |

sry meant "you can't understand what thier saying" and I disagree that metal has no meaning and never has listen to megadeth and I think you'll agree with me. I'm sure megadeth isn't the only metal band that has any meaning but I can't think of any others that for sure have a meaning. but then again what do I know. |

@Superking: Good point. Hating is wrong. As for metal goes, I am a very devoted metalhead. You just have to listen to the right bands, as there are so many cookie-cutter ones. There are plenty of good metal bands out of the hordes of meteocre ones. You just have to look beyond the mainstream/radio media to find them. The same goes for rap. |

Also, about the whole thing with 311 and CAKE, then again, I was talking about the vocal style. Completely apart from the generalizations. A lot of punk/alternative has no meaning other than "Oh, that rhymes, so I'll put that there, and here's the three chords I know". Also, some music is just for fun, you know?
I agree with BENZIN. There's cookie-cutter bands in every genre. But many bands all have deep meanings in their lyrics. Muse especially, if you've heard Soldier's Poem. That one is REALLY philosophical, in a way. |
