I assume that it's an annoyance and impediment to speaking a language. How long does it take to stop translating to your native language as you read/speak/listen to a language, and is it something you can teach yourself? |

I wouldn't know how long it takes to stop translating to your native language, even I still do that.
Yes, it is something you can teach yourself, if you dedicate yourself to it. |

My mother tongue is Mandarin, and I've learned English for 10 years, and I can understand English without translate it into Mandarin, two 3 years ago.
That means it takes me 7 years to do it.

I can speak English without Translating it mentally and I did that within 2 years ;o
For German the same, except I didn't need to teach myself a lot.
French is something I think about sometimes. |

Yes, and the best way to practice is to walk somewhere where the language is used - you will pick up knowledge unconciously. |

It takes some effort, but I am able to stop the mental translation while reading in French. |
