Before WWI, Israel was part of the Ottoman Empire. It was not Israel nor Palestine, just Ottoman. In 1918 after WWI ended, Israel became a mandate with Jordan of the British known as British Mandate o Palestine and Trans-Jordan. These two territories were just referred to as Palestine. Now what is Palestine and where does it come from? Palestine comes from Philistine, a nation from the old testament that went to war with C'naan often and had the famous Goliath.
Now let's go to 1947. After the holo.caust, civil war broke out in Palestine between the Jews and the Muslims there. Neither of them were invaders because they already lived there. The war went so out of control that the British gave the territory to the newly formed United Nations to resolve. After a referendum, Israel was born and Jews from around Europe flocked to Israel. Before I go into the first war, I want to share with you more about the civil war.
At first, the Jews were offered 10% of the land. The Jews accepted but the Palestinians declined. Then they were offered 25%. They accepted but the Palestinians declined again. Eventually it wentupn numbers that I forget and the Jews were offered both Israel and Jordan, but the Jews just wanted Israel. After this, Jordan was born and some Saudi prince became the king.
Right after Israel was born, the Palestinians fled to neighboring countries so the countries could defeat Israel, which they didn't. In response to this, Israel denied them access back into the country. In the 6 day war, Israel strategically attacked first against Jordan after tensions rised between the numerous countries surrounding it. The war resulted in Israel capturing the West Bank.
Skipping forward, Israel gave back the Sinai desert to Egypt in a peace effort which was accepted. Jordan and Israel have a peace treaty now too. To skip even further forward, Israel left Gaza in 2004. The government of Palestine elected was Hamas which is a terrorist organization. Hamas rocketed Israel and Israel fired back at them. After many terrorist attacks from the West Bank, Israel built a wall around it which has been very successful in halting terrorism. The conflict still rages in Gaza. The end. |
