Nirvana or Breaking Benjamin
Nirvana: Started a new era in rock, and was one of the last good bands to go mainstream.
Breaking Benjamin: I can relate to many of their songs. Plus, I live in the town the band started at, so everyone here likes them, or at least knows them. I met the lead singer, Benjamin Burnley, at Wal-Mart a year or two ago. |

Oh yeah a band too... Coil, because I like them. And if they aren't my favorite band, I WILL say this: The Ape of Naples is one of my favorites of all time, like Top 10 worthy. |

Megadeth:
As much as I hate Dave Mustaine, Megadeth still remains one of my favorite bands ever. They can make both simple music, complex music, technical riffs. Engrossing lyrics that discuss politics and war. I find all their albums amazing.
Vektor:
A recent band who's first album came out in 2009. If you're a self-centered classic rock elitist who thinks all modern music sucks, but hasn't heard anything aside from what's on the radio, listen to Vektor. Technical riffs. Insane song writing. Lyrics that talk about space and sci-fi. And David Disanto's vocals are some of the most incredible vocals ever. Ranging from these low, guttural growls, to these soaring banshee howls as Anthony Fantano put it. Black Future is easily one of the best albums ever. Outer Isolation is also a really good album.
Death:
The pioneers of Death metal. I saw a tribute band consisting of past members a couple of weeks ago. It reminded me of why I love this band so much. Great song writing, ranging from simplistic stuff, to really technical work. They have evolved their sound over the span of, sadly only, seven albums. Starting with some fairly simplistic death metal, to progressive death metal, but not boring as hell like Opeth. RIP Chuck Schuldiner. |

"Nirvana: Started a new era in rock, and was one of the last good bands to go mainstream."
are you talking about US or UK Nirvana |

The Beatles:
I can easily sympathize with some of The Beatle's songs and see some of the deeper meaning in their songs despite their earlier career, I favour some of their slower/sad songs, their upbeat songs, and their psychedelic songs. It's just a band that I listened to, and it grew on me fast. Abbey Road, Revolver, and Rubber Soul posing as my favourite albums by them. Abbey Road being an album you fully have to listen to, to enjoy it (Especially the 'Abbey Road' melody). Rubber Soul being the bridge between their earlier career and later career which finds perfect tranquillity, harmony, and doesn't overkill it. And Revolver being almost all of their later career in a nutshell minus the second-hand album 'Let it Be' and not pulling anything from 'Abbey Road'. It's a one of a kind album by them, pulling a lot of things out that you wouldn't normally hear from a 'Mediocre Pop Band' as most people would put it.

The Beatles are a mediocre pop band. |

"The Beatles are a mediocre pop band."
ironic you would find close-mindedness in a lover of metal music

@Zir
Calling the Beatles a mediocre pop band doesn't make him close-minded.
There were a few bands like them before they became famous and bands like them around the same time they did become famous. |

@Kartix
You took the words out of my mouth. |

"Calling the Beatles a mediocre pop band doesn't make him close-minded."
in the case of the beatles, it really does
to completely neglect all the advancements they made for the industry and all the techniques they created just because they maybe aren't your favorite band is rather close-minded
"There were a few bands like them before they became famous and bands like them around the same time they did become famous."
there was never really any all-white bands before them that wrote their own material
and these other British Invasion acts only became famous because of the Beatles making America aware of English acts with their arrival at JFK airport in 1964 |

"Oh yeah a band too... Coil, because I like them. And if they aren't my favorite band, I WILL say this: The Ape of Naples is one of my favorites of all time, like Top 10 worthy."
addendum: there's really a lot to say about coil (and the ape of naples), but i don't want to say much of it; translating my feelings to words might mitigate the mystery of why it touches me so. but i suppose i will say a few words for the ape of naples.. i will say it has its odd poor moment (chiefly "the last amethyst deceiver," and only because it's too close to yet markedly inferior to the original; the fact that much of "the ape of naples" is made out of (drastically) recycled material feels appropriate considering the timing of the album), and i will spotlight one moment in particular: when "heaven's blade" cuts through balance's voice at its conclusion, transforming it but not obliterating it, i'm surprised the goosebumps don't puncture little holes in my skin.
and then there's the alchemical transformation that is "going up" ... yeah, let's just not talk about it.
coil is often magical (omission of the "k" is not sic), and this is the opposite of an exception to that.
rip john and peter
that's about all i can say.. |

>to completely neglect all the advancements they made for the industry and all the techniques they created
They didn't do anything for the industry.
>there was never really any all-white bands before them that wrote their own material
One example: Bill Haley and His Comets
