Im the drummer in my band BUT: I have a small guitar amp (I can play guitar too) and im thining about taking my iPod, Getting a Gong app, or any sound, and hooking it up to my small amp, and then cranking that way up at gigs for something extra.

That would NOT work. Drums are usually loud enough acoustically at gigs, but i've used my electronic drum set with a surround sound system before live. But you'll be fine just with an acoustic drum set, for sure.

Electronic drum sets are worth it, because you can create gong sounds live, if you want to.

Really? People don't go to gigs and just play drums. They play drums with bands, in songs. The practice isn't the most beautiful sound, but so? It's crucial to practice drums, along with every other instrument. So there can be songs with drums. And do you even realize most people practice with electronic sets, with headphones?
