Unfortunately the way in which the terrain is designed means that it is defined as a singular object, the best way to understand this is to envisage it as a manipulatable mesh, and therefore individual parts cannot have individual characteristics. This is hard to explain as you can colourize an individual part of this mesh which would suggest they retain individual characteristics, but rest assured, they don't.

adam... Terrain is not meant to be used for buildings/game objects. Terrain is meant to be the base upon which the bricks are laid onto. It does a great a job at that too. Want and underground feature? Carve it out and place the bricks along the tunnel to give it detail/insulate it.

Once again terrain falls down as I would have to create an elevator a specific shape and size.

... Part's take specific shapes and sizes too. In any case, it's not hard to carve out the area needed to place the elevator in then make the elevator.
