The term "Easter Eggs" comes from the idea that you could hide certain features on your website or program, and that people could later stumble upon them just as they would an actual Easter egg. The features are not meant to be functional but rather humourous, such as doing the Konami code on Railslove would have an 8-bit Pinkie Pie run across the page.
Once again, the point of such features is not to be functional, but rather entertaining. Do you think typing "askew" into Google was meant to be functional in any way? It was simply to provide something interesting for their users to do for a few seconds with the possibility of garnishing publicity. That's all.
