So, I've taken to training with the Japanese Katana in the real world while I'm saving up for one, and it's kind of made me realize... Why do almost all zombie games that use melee weapons have them?
It takes training to properly use one without harming yourself or others and to do a lot of damage, but everyone can pick it up and sling it around but somehow kill everything and not themself

even though without proper training, chances are you would cut yourself? and its not a tiny cut, most cuts with a katana are lethal. |

because katanas are awesome
but, about it's actual effectiveness
would you prefer a longsword or katana in a zombie apocalypse?
The rather obvious choice would be katana, as in most series the only/most effective way is to 'remove the head or destroy the brain' (yesshaunofthedead). Longsword is more of a thrusting weapon, katana a slashing due to it's curved edge.
and yeah, blunt weapons would be difficult to use due to the extra momentum required to actually land a killing blow.
see, it's not the army or the badass people that will survive the zombie apocalypse
it's the gamers. |

actually longsword is good for both thrusting and slashing, it also requires slightly less skill than a katana |

i could see gamers surviving the apocalypse, really.
not only would we just have a little common sense, knowledge of -
actually we'd die.
but it takes a lot more training with a katana to use it, a longsword or blunt weapon doesn't. not only that, but your 'battle ready mall katana' in some stores will break on contact with anything. |

a blunt weapon, or even axe would be a much better choice than a katana
so long as the axe isn't one of those "zombii survivl" axes |

reminds me of the Star Wars lore for the lightsaber.
Anyone can hold and try to use a lightsaber, but only a jedi can use it without being a danger to himself. |

thats because lightsabers are actually based of japanese swordfighting if i recall
in games where you can get a close look, most of the time when a jedi draws their saber, they take a pretty typical stance for swordfighting.
and i say swordfighting because i have no idea what the proper name is yet |

they have at least 3 combat forms of which i only know one and i think its laito or something of the sort.

They're just sharp and efficient swords. They're cool-looking and iconic to a degree.
There is also nodachi katanas for the guys who like the sharpness of a katana, and for the people who like two handed swords. :D |
