Instead of going offline, you can choose "AFK/BRB" button and it changes the green icon to yellow, "Do Not Disturb" is red, and "Online" is green. You should be able to choose from those so people know if you are at the keyboard or busy

@Stephen, they mean no AFK buttons in-game, as game designers can script them. I don't see a huge need for this. If you don't want someone to bother you than just turn off pms, chats, and parties.
