Help with scripting

I'm really new to scripting, even though I'm on roblox for 2 years. Can someone please help me out, because I want to make a game, and I know I can't just learn to script certain things, but to learn making experiments. I've been on LuaLearners' site, and I'm stuck at the Variables & 'local'. I can't understand scripting in Lua very much. Can anyone help me out?
