If you have come to this on tips to RP, that's not 100% what this is for. This is for the newbies to 'advanced' RP* (*Most ROBLOX RP servers aren't this high of level. Trust me. Items that are generally for this heavy RP are marked with this: "(*)"). So let's get started on this.
First things first, you need to know what OOC and IC mean.
OOC Means "Out Of Character"; You aren't being your RP Person. When chatting and OOC, please mark your chats with (()). EXAMPLE:
XanthicDragon: ((Hi guys! This is how you chat OOC))
Why?
Well, a single parenthesis mark actually means whispering! (*)
IC Means "In Character"; You are actively playing as your RP Person. On this there really is no designated way to chat, as long as it's not in (()).
Now, I'm pretty sure all of us ROBLOXians have heard of "Godmodding". This is one of three RP No-No's.
Godmodding, in true definition, is not allowing the actor (The person trying to do ______ to you) to execute his/her action by constantly avoiding it. Wait, what? Pretty much that means if I try to hit you with a sword and you're cornered, you can't say *Dodges* or *catches the blade* or anything that would resist my attack. However.....
There is another thing, but this time the actor is forcefully doing something.
This is called Powergaming. Powergaming is forcing something to occur to the actor's will, without allowing any change. Common examples of this are *kills instantly* or *fires bow at you no dodges no misses*.
In order to equal these, BOTH PLAYERS MUST allow some form of hit to be inflicted and some form of resistance inflicted.
Here's an example:
A: *Attempts to cut B with a long sword* (Right there! "Attempts". That right there is the way you don't powergame!)
B: *Dodges the attack, but ends up getting cut on the side.* (There, B dodges the attack, but remains respective of the weapon used. A long sword can cut pretty easily at a larger distance, so B gets hit!)
B: *Attacks back with a throwing dagger, however, his side is in pain so he likely misses the throw* (At this point, B knows he has been cut badly, so he respects that and removes precision from his throw!)
A: *Thinking the dagger would hit him, he ends up jumping right into the path of the dagger! He gets stabbed in the leg* (This is optional for an action, but recommended. If A were to support the miss, it would cause a problem.)
After reading the above, notice a pattern? They both keep it equal, but keep it accurate to RP at the same time! However, please note that in a more hectic RP it could get difficult to keep the median.
So we've covered powergaming and godmodding, but where's the third? The third one is called "Metagaming". Its exact definition is "Using information acquired while OOC for purposes of IC". In English? Well, first of all, this is the MOST COMMON THING that happens. Since the ROBLOX chat is global (Meaning EVERYBODY can see it, no matter where they are). Metagaming is using something you heard out of character, while in character. (For example, someone on the other side of the world chats "Hi steve!" and you see it. You aren't talking to them as your roleplay character, so your character, Blockhead, doesn't know the person said "Hi steve!" but you, behind your computer, do.)
I feel as if I am not explaining this very well, so i'm going to give an example.
...Right now someone in Japan probably called his mom. Do you know that for sure? (If you aren't there) No, you probably don't. Now: Think of that happening in a game here on ROBLOX but you see the whole call in the chat. In real life, do you have a little box of chats in the top left corner of your vision that shows what everybody on the world is saying? No. Metagaming is sorta like that. You see it on your screen, but your character doesn't.
On my RP games, proper RP notation is expected and should be assumed.
REVIEW:
in my RP games...
When you aren't talking as your character, place (( )) around your chat...
..When you are RPing with someone, you aren't God! Be reasonable...
...You can't tell if your friend's house phone is ringing. Don't use things you, behind your screen see, but your character doesn't see for the things your character knows. |
