http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/2014/3/5/5474440/rick-ankiel-retires-cardinals-mlb and so the least specialized player in the major leagues leaves the game if you do not know who rick ankiel is, the short story is that he was a young prospect pitcher who washed out and then reinvented himself only to become a mediocre hitter

He was destined to be a great pitcher. Then he magically lost control of everything.

he was average at best for a year and a half after his rebound next year he hit 11 homers and he wasn't even a regular starter for the last 3 years of his career

I can understand why he switched from being a pitcher to batter -- mainly it had to do with control issues, I think. Still, if you took a look at his overall pitching stats, they're not all that bad. Not fantastic, no, but not bad, either. Perhaps what stood out the most was the walk rate.

he dropped his shoulder and hands too much when he hit and pitchers figured it out I think

He was a good pitcher, then the playoffs came, then he had an oppenents obp of like .700. He will be known as one of those guys whose career is known by something bad like Moises Alou, Bill Buckner, etc...

He basically batted like a pitcher would his whole career. Not sure how he hung around for so long.
