Now that I have your attention...
Why is it that in ROBLOX, a flashlight shines brighter far away than up close?
Why is it that spot lights have this "zone" where light doesn't shine?
Why is it that the darkness of a shadow depends upon the thickness of a brick?
What is brightness measured in?
How do the developers of dynamic lighting NOT research the MATH of lights?
There is no doubt, the dynamic lighting in ROBLOX is kind of ridiculous. It's ridiculous to get it to work properly, and you can't use the effects you would normally use in real life.

Can you make the decals free? |

All good points. |

Alright, I'd support that. |

Support,
Oh and the reason for 1. is (I believe, don't get me wrong, Im not sure):
Maybe the SpotLight of the Flashlight you're holding is like maybe 3 studs away FROM the Flashilght, so it's not directly coming from it, rather 3 - 4 studs away?
Reason for 2. is just probably a thing they messed up. I made a little box with maybe Blocks that are 1/5 stud thick, and the light from the sun or from a Light is going, like, under the Block itself, which is weird because there is no opening in any stop of the box!
Although, full support on this, also check out this Forum if you care for the Graphics!

I totally agree! |

support, to make a fully black room i basically had to make the room of tons of huge blocks since a 1 x 1 box will be as bright as if it was open |

dynamic lightings are a fairly fresh update, so i think they're gonna update them anyway, but i hope that they will see your points and this is the way they'll update. |

Sigma you seem to think that to code this it'll be easy and will but have a negative performance on low grade pcs like mine. Although the thickness of the brick depends the brightness of the room bug should be fixed. |

AGREED.
Light (for some dumb reason) passes through thin blocks (IRL it does not), and on ROBLOX, the shadow, for thin blocks, isn't even there. |

@cain How would it do so? If the pc doesn't support dynamic lighting right now, I'd see but you seem to be able to support dynamic lighting, so it wouldn't make a difference.
Here's my siggy... Done. |

It seems there's more extreme calculations to be done if they do it the realistic way. Not so much drawing the shadows as it is now, but calculating the correct way to draw them. It's already not the fastest lighting system already.
We're better off manually drawing dynamic lighting with a vertex painting tool, or having them precalculate everything before you publish the place.
I think the technical term is "baking shadows". That would seem more reasonable to do for low performance computers. |

@gamehereo, I got a headache from learning the maths. I decided to stick with the simple version to avoid overwhelming people. |

Yeah, but still.. That last picture of what dynamic lighting is supposed to look like would be too slow for a game like Roblox. We wouldn't be able to build massive places with it. Especially as they branch off to mobile devices.
It's blurry for better performance. I remember they said that. Probably to save memory too. |

The reason flashlights shine brighter farther away is because roblox works with 4x4x4 voxels. This makes it dimmer because the light is small and most of the voxel is still going to be dark. This is also why bricks less than 4 studs thick in any direction let a little bit of light through. It basically averages it out.
Brightness doesn't really have a measurement on roblox.
The developers did do a lot of research, but they also have to take into account that other computers would struggle a lot if voxels were, say, 2x2x2 or 1x1x1. They might be able to change things eventually, but for the moment, this is what we have. |

Um, what above?
What I believe is wrong is that ROBLOX has it so that brightness is how many candelas are at the spherical cap of the light's steradian. Meaning that they tell you to put in a distance and brightness, then the thing calculates it so that the lumens can be achieved at that distance...
Then again, the fades would STILL work.
Voxels have frankly nothing to to with this. |
