So, lately I've been doing a lot of designing. And, like, programming. And like re-inventing the way a game should feel on ROBLOX. Because I'm a stupid pretentious butt wipe. And in the time I've worked on that, I've like realized stuff. About design. That is good to know. If you like wanna make stuff. I dunno
So here ya go today I'm gonna talk about game feel because SHUT YOUR MOUTH AND LISTEN YOU DUMMY
So like, imagine just the feeling of walking around in a ROBLOX game, or playing a ROBLOX game, or doing... something on ROBLOX. It's like stupid most of the time, right? Like menus usually feel dumb and clunky, movement isn't satisfying on its own, like all the pieces fit, but it just doesn't feel fun to play.
Go play that stupid dump Project Pokemon thing on the top rated page and, like, compare it to ACTUALLY playing Pokemon. Chances are, the actual game feels better. The buttons are more bleep bloop and the menus are all flashy and there's a cool sound effects like BWWWOOOOOOOOH
And that's what I'm getting at. When you're designing things, add little touches. Do what you can to make your mechanics feel good. Reinvent the wheel if you have to. Stare at your screen and consider the impact a well timed flash, or a dialog box fading in would have compared to there not being a flash, or the dialog box just 'appearing'.
Like actually think about how your game, down to it's simplest mechanics FEELS to play. Make the little seconds of your game have tension, anticipation, even if there's not much to be found in the actual situation on screen.
It creates a feeling of satisfaction in the mind of the player. It creates an interest curve and base mechanics for your entire game to just FEEL better. It creates A GOOD FRICKIN GAME!
tl;dr: MAKE YOUR GAME FEEL GOOD AND STUFF AND DON'T JUST MAKE IT LIKE THE BARE MINIMUM FUNCTIONALITY BECAUSE YOU'RE LAZY AND A POOP!
