⋆⋆(Before skimming or Skipping anything remember, Knowledge is Power. This is even more so true in yugioh. What you skip and someone else reads could be the difference in them beating you by a long shot.)⋆⋆
Alright Class, It has come to my attention that many players are running around Battle City with 60 card decks. I understand why, I really do. You add all the cards that look good and useful and you figure the more the better. Let's face it, no matter how professional we may be now, we all started the same way. But here's the thing. In yugioh a deck is only as good as it's consistency. This means how well it works on average. If you only get the cards you need for your main combo or whatever once in every 10 duels then that, my friend, is very poor consistency. Good consistency isn't easy to get though. I have ya'll here today to give you some tips to improve your deck & it's consistency.
⋆A Major Term
-Card Advantage
(In simple terms, how many cards, more or less, something puts you compared to your opponent. If they have 5 cards in hand & 3 on field and you have 2 in hand and 1 on field, then they have the card advantage. Pot of Greed lets you draw 2, this would be a CA, Card Advantage, of +1 sense you went down 1 by using it. I use Pot of Greed! -1 for use, +2 for effect = +1. Something like Lightning Vortex would be -2 for use and then you'd add the number of cards it destroyed. If 2 monsters were destroyed it'd be -2 for use +2 for effect = +0. You'd break even. However, if it destroyed 4 monsters it'd be -2 for use +4 for effect = +2. These are the conditions you want to use cost cards under. (Costs are payments for an effect such as, discard 1, or tribute 1 monster, etc..))
⋆King's Rules to Basic Deck Building⋆
⋆1- Stick to 40 cards as best you can and never exceed 42 cards.
(Let's think about this. It's late game and your opponent entered with 40 cards while you came in with your 60 cards. Now he only has 10 cards left while you have 30. You're basically top-decking, this means whoever draws what they need 1st wins, now who do you think has the better chance of drawing what they need? If you have 3 cards that can help you then you have a 10% chance at best to get it. On the other hand, say he also has 1 or 2 cards to help him. He has a 10% chance at worst to get what he needs. You're best case is his worst case. It's simple, stay to 40 cards and you have a much greater chance to draw the right cards at the right time.)
⋆2- Have around 20 monsters, around 12 spells and around 8 traps.
(Balance my friend. If you have to few monsters than you'll notice you don't draw them when you need to be offensive or defencive. Too many traps and your deck's chances of winning are near 0 should a Royal Decree & or Jinzo be played. I've personally found this to be the most balanced setup in general.)
⋆3- Monsters are not win conditions.
(Your central theme should not be "Summon this monster". Aside from Exodia, there is no monster that will outright win you the game. Not the Egyptian Gods, not Gate Guardian, not anyone. Monsters, even incredibly powerful monsters, are tools to be used at your disposal. They are not win conditions.)
⋆4- Anything worth running is worth running in multiples.
(This is more true of monsters than spells and traps, but is in general true. Most top decks run all cards that aren't limited in twos or threes. The logic is this: if a card is powerful, you want to draw it more often. If you have more copies, you'll do that.)
⋆5- The less conditional a card is the better.
(This covers activation conditions, costs, benefits, card advantage, everything. The best card is one that is powerful, has little to no cost, generates lots of card advantage, and requires no other cards to be present. Dark Hole is a prime example of such a card. When considering this point, ask yourself "How useful would this card be if it were the only card that I had to use?" or more simply "What would topdecking this card mean for me?")
⋆6- The more versatile a card is, the better.
(Continuing number 5, a card that can be used against more cards and strategies is more helpful than a card with limited use. For example, Solemn Judgment can be used against all types of cards, making it more useful than Magic Jammer, which can only negate Spells.)
⋆7- The more Card Advantage you result in from using a card, the better.
(Refer to the Major Term and this should be self-explanatory. But to make sure you understand I'll again look at Dark Hole. If the opponent has two monsters, and you have none, activating Dark Hole will leave with the opponent with 2 less cards, & you with only one less card. That generates Card Advantage. Now let's look at the same situation, this time looking at Lightning Vortex again. Lightning Vortex requires a discard cost, which means it requires 2 cards to play: Lightning Vortex & the discarded card. Your opponent loses 2 cards, and you lose 2 cards. This generates no card advantage.
That's all for today and I may or may not make another lesson on some card tips or gameplay. |
