What is a cadence? A. Cadence is the snap count, which refers to when the snap between the center and the QB starts and the play begins. Our common cadence is "SET"..."HIKE". This is referred to as 1. If we need to hurry, we'll run a quick cadence. This goes "HIKE", and is referred to as Q. An unspoken cadence, or Silent, will catch the defense off guard. The QB says "HIKE" in the TC ["% HIKE"], and the play begins. This is called S. Any cadence greater than one is represented as the number of 'HIKES' in it. This is commonly used to draw the defense offsides. Ex: '3' would be called out as "SET"..."HIKE"..."HIKE"..."HIKE". ❸ Misdirections Q. What is a misdirection? A. A misdirection is broadly anything to confuse the defense. Our most used common misdirection is motion. This is represented as M, and refers to players moving before a snap. The QB will 'wave' ["/e wave"], telling the player to do their motion, either during or before the cadence. Other misdirections include audibles. Audibles, announced as "Switch", are play changes at the line of scrimmage if the QB doesn't like what he sees. It would be said in the team chat ["Switch, new play"]. Other misdirections include: Spreads (Start bunched up, and spread out wide during the cadence) "Spread" ❹ Play Calling The format looks as is: [Play-Direction-Any Misdirection-Cadence] This will be yelled in from the sideline by me, unless the QB is given permission to call plays. Ex: "RO L M SPREAD 4" Even though it may look like a lot, break it up: RO represents the play call. You'll learn what this is in the next section. L means the play must be going left. M means there is a motion by the receiver during the play. Spread means after the motion that the other receivers will go wide during the cadence. And 4 represents the amount of hikes in the cadence. ❺ Plays **More will be added over time! :)** RO [Read Option] RO Pass 2B [2Back] Sweep 2B Pass Direct RB Snap ❻ Defense We run 3 defensive coverages: Cover 1, Cover 2, and Cover 3. Cover 1 is Man-to-Man [MTM]. Everyone picks a guy, and guards that guy. Cover 2 is Corners MTM on the WR's, and LB's and S's play zones. The LB zone is anything 1-10 yards off the line of scrimmage, and safeties help the corners not let anything past them. Cover 3 is all Zone. Corners take the whole deep 1/3 of the field on their sides, and the safeties take the middle 1/3. The LBs become responsible of anything underneath. Defensive plays will be called as follows: Coverage-Any Blitz/Stunts Blitzes: -CB blitz: Corners come off the edge -LB blitz: LBs blitz up the middle Stunts: -Stems (Lining up like you're going to blitz, and backing off. OR lining up like coverage, but blitz on the cadence. -DE/LB Stunts: They cross to confuse the offensive lineman. -QB Watch: Someone is assigned just to assure the QB doesn't scramble. Example call: Cover 2 DE Stunt Fake Blitz Stem So, it's a cover 2 defense. DEs cross. LBs fake blitz, and drop into coverage.
