With the dawn of universes/datastores, CSG, and the ease of creating/managing local parts with FilteringEnabled, the possible ways I can set Metroid up has increased.
Original thread: http://www.roblox.com/Forum/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=114370211
Lots of things have changed -- new APIs and features, the growing of my brain as I age, time has continued to sift through the rift of ideas, and the ideas in the previous thread -- they have helped me considerably.
I was contemplating saving games either to players or to parties, and to continue playing a party save, all members would have to be present. I am going to go with the former -- there isn't even a good reason to go for the second. Any progress you make in a game will be saved to your profile, regardless if you were in multiplayer or singleplayer. You'll also be able to switch between multiplayer/singleplayer at any given point in time. There will also be two game modes: Campaign and Arena. The campaign is the campaign, and the arena contains two things itself: Competitive arena mode and Cooperative arena mode. In Cooperative mode, you'll be able to select any number of available bosses and fight them with other players. This can be multiplayer or singleplayer, and you can only fight bosses you have unlocked by beating in the game (or by other means for new bosses I create). The competitive is PvP matches in which players fight in free-for-all or team matches against other players. You can only fight on maps you have unlocked by visiting them in the game or by other means for maps not in the game.
Singleplayer will behave as you would expect, and this has been made even easier by ROBLOX with the release of 1-player-servers :P Multiplayer is where most of the changes come in. You will either be able to form a multiplayer party with select friends, or have the game automatically sort you into a party. There will be no party leader, any majority vote can kick someone from a party. Players can only kick people from the party outside of combat. Kicked players are moved instantly to singleplayer and are penalized by moving them back to the previous save point. The biggest issue with multiplayer is probably deciding how far players can go from each other. The issue with the spread out players missing boss battles is easily fixable, but what of the issue of loss of the multiplayer feeling? Why bother playing multiplayer if you're just going to split up? I'll be forcing players to stick together -- no one player will be able to travel more than a room away. If an idle player is more than a room away, he'll be teleported the the main group -- if someone tries to open a door a room away, they won't be able to until the the group is closer. I might bump this to two rooms depending on how this all works out. HOWEVER, I realize some things get tedious to go get as a team like the Artifacts, so after a boss is cleared from an area (i.e. Flaahgra from Chozo Ruins), players are then able to freely roam that part of the map. However, if a team wants to go down/up an elevator to a new area, they all have to be there -- even if that new area is free-roaming. Same with portals from Metroid Prime 2. (Yes I'll eventually do all the Metroid Prime games)
One final thing I'd like to say. When the campaign is done for a Metroid Prime game, I will create a campaign for each faction of that game before moving on. For example, before I start on Metroid Prime 2, you'll be able to play the Metroid campaign and arena battles as the Space Pirates and Chozo. Before I create Prime 3, you'll be able to play as the Space Pirates, Luminoth, Galactic Federation, Ing, and Dark Samus in Prime 2. After the completion of the main storyline in Prime 3, you'll be able to play as Rundas, Ghor, Gandrayda, Galactic Federation (both Olympus and Valhalla), Space Pirates, and Dark Samus. One thing I am extremely eager for is that the way you play a faction can affect other games if you choose. For example, if I play as the Galactic Federation in Prime 2 and survive the Ing attacks, if I start the campaign as Samus again, I'll have the federation to help me attack the Ing and use as a home base. If I play as the Chozo in Prime 1 and do a good job of holding up civilization, and then play as the Space Pirates in Prime 1, I'll have a tough time as the Space Pirates taking out the Chozo. Note that this is the very last thing I'll do before moving onto the next game, as it's extremely advanced and requires the campaigns for all factions to be.
Feel free to suggest ideas and express your concerns below! |

Two things I forgot to mention:
1) Scanned data from your teammates will automatically be transfered to you.
2) Players will be knocked down to the lowest player's level when they form a party. |

You should add a notification after a player enters an elevator and wants to go up somewhere. The notification will pretty much tell people
"This player is taking the elevator to Chozo Ruins. Do you want to go there?"
with the options of "Yes," and "No." Depending how large the party is, there should be a majority vote, as if it's just two players, there should be an automatic snapback, since you're going with the whole "near rooms" idea.
To be honest, I'd like to explore the entire map from the start and the snapback option for two rooms should be left for linear areas like the Frigate Orpheon and Magmoor Caverns.
That, and there's also something that bothered me: what would happen if my partner was AFK? I wouldn't be able to go anywhere until he does something or gets disconnected. |

This is a strange question but, who would you be playing as in the Multiplayer exactly?
I mean, we know Prime 2 had re-colored Samus'es in the PvP arena.
And we know there's just Samus in the Single Player Campaign.
Are the players going to be in re-colored Samus suits minus the helmet?
Or are they just all going to be one Samus with a nametag above their head?
I'm really curious to know about this. |

"You should add a notification after a player enters an elevator and wants to go up somewhere. The notification will pretty much tell people."
You won't have an option to teleport -- you'll have to go there to the other players manually. However, I will add a notification "Player1 is waiting at the Elevator to Magmoor Caverns."
"To be honest, I'd like to explore the entire map from the start and the snapback option for two rooms should be left for linear areas like the Frigate Orpheon and Magmoor Caverns." You can play singleplayer or play with someone you know. I'll be changing around some enemies and rooms and whatnot, so you'll pretty much need a partner for some things in multiplayer.
"That, and there's also something that bothered me: what would happen if my partner was AFK? I wouldn't be able to go anywhere until he does something or gets disconnected." Oh, forgot to talk about that. You can always leave the party and go back to singleplayer. I'll also add an afk feature for people who idle for 3 minutes or more. If combat ensues, they'll have 30 seconds to react. If they don't, they'll be kicked. You can initiate combat on an afk player by shooting them, although it won't deal any damage.
"Are the players going to be in re-colored Samus suits minus the helmet?" I'll be ditching ROBLOX hats -- it'll be full-body samuses. Yes, it'll be multi-colored samuses, but not the way you think. I plan on allowing players to customize the color of their armor, and maybe even the suit itself. Allies will have nametags about their head, but enemies won't so they can hide. |

That raises another question.
In Metroid Prime, the player could tell he lost the Varia Suit because the suit changed.
The player could tell that he had the Gravity Suit because it was dimmed purple.
The player could tell that he had the Phazon Suit because it was mostly black and red.
Since you plan to make them multi-colored, that means we can't just force them into other colors like Prime did.
Are you going to make it like Other M where Gravity is just assumed by a purple aura ( and something along the lines for Phazon as well ) ?
Are you going to make it so that each suit looks different in some way (kind of like how the varia suit and power suit's models were changed due to the Game Boy's color limitations) and just put on a coat of paint?
Or are you just going to make it so that players can choose a color to go with the suit they just acquired (as in they can't pick the one that they previously used due to having a new suit).
Or better yet, are you just going to make all suits and colors customizable for the player upon acquisition?
That, and since we're going on the lines of customizable Power Suits, I elect a Fusion Suit model gamepass :D

All suits will definitely be able to have their color changed -- maybe the shape. Instead of doing "suits" for the game, I might just have them as "Varia Environment Stabilizer", "Gravity Booster", and "Phazon Absorbers"
I'll make sure to add the fusion suit :P |

how much development progress is the game having (aka how far can a user go before reaching a dead end due to a in construction) |

how about for a boss fight in 4+ player multiplayer in flaagra fight, you have to shoot all panels at once (5 secs in between them going back).
and in metroid prime you would be assinged to a certain beam color, then you would use the beam color if it switches beam requirment to your beam.
same for core fight, but with visors and there would be a 4th visor unlocked after phazon suit in a 4th, deeper floor of phazon mines
(gamma visor, used to find hidden switchs and power sources inside walls) |
