at least in America the majority of your future is determined by a standardized test? |
|
|
Screw america honestly. -_- |
|
|
@Troop
also realize the majority of the people on the planet live in a place far worse than America. |
|
|
|
also realize that even if you work hard in manual labor, work at a office your whole life, or go to college you could still end up in the lower-class or lower-middle-class |
|
|
It really depends on the job. Let's say you want to go to nursing. You'll probably have a hard time since so many people are going for nursing jobs. Since I'm not an idiot or well social or anything. Sticking to a manufacturing career since it pays well and employers need experienced people. |

You determine your own future. |

@kill
no you don't.
you could be born dumb and want to be a physicist on the same level as Einstein, but it wont happen because you were born dumb. |

"Or whatever it's called in each state"
It's called STAR testing or was in Cali. Don't know what it is in other states.
Either way, last time I checked, standardized testing is actually pretty pointless. Colleges don't check those scores. Jobs don't check those scores. No one does really. It's simply testing to see how well the school is doing it's job, hence the push by the teachers to do amazingly well on them.
It's honestly more for the schools than the individual. |

@romuluz
have you never heard of the SAT? or the ACT? |
|
|
romuluzJoin Date: 2010-04-12 Post Count: 18124 |
Yeah.
Even then they're not absolutely necessary unless you're going directly to a 4 year college, then and only then is it essential to take and do well on an SAT/ACT.
For those who are going to community colleges and then transferring to a state, it's absolutely pointless to take them as they don't check those scores from transferees.
On top of that, there are many businessmen, entrepreneurs and others who either scored poorly on SAT's, or didn't take them at all.

On top of that, there are many businessmen, entrepreneurs and others who either scored poorly on SAT's, or didn't take them at all and still have gone on to be sucessful*.
Should have put that in there. |

Actually they're larger than you think :/.
I'm not talking 1% here(Although they are included), I'm talking doing well enough to support themselves, which includes most people who use the transfer system.
Again, the whole point of going to community college first is either due to poor finances, or poor scores. And yes, you can still get into a good college if you don't do well on the SAT's. You're just not going there right out of high school. |

Some people are lucky and have a high level of business skills while not being particularly gifted in understanding sciences or mathematics, and not being able to necessarily write well. What it comes down to is that you do determine your own future, you just have to put the effort in to get there. |

@romuluz
I was assuming that when you said 'successful' you meant Upper-class or at least upper-middle-class |

^^^^
This isn't some Divergent crap. We're in a free country, and while yes, SAT's are essential to some people's lives it's not game over if you score poorly. |

success means achieving your goals. If someone achieved their goals they are successful. |
