Real life:
(Taking into consideration first time holding either)
Knives - Swing and slash, nothing to it, light
Swords - Much heavier, will require weight behind you when beginning, after that actual skills/techniques can take months to years to learn,practice,master.
Guns-
Small fire arm - You can point and shoot, little resistance required to keep it from flying out of your hand when shot.
Larger automatics/shotguns - You can shoot it sure, not as heavy as a sword except for the shotguns, but you can very well expect it to come flying back into your face unless you are ready for when that high caliber is shot. Also just because you can shoot doesn't mean you have deadly aim, that takes constant practice.
