They REALLY need a defenseman, and a good one. But, as we all know, the Oilers front office is full of empty-headed dumbasses and they'll probably draft McDavid or Eichel. This is my siggy. There are many like it, but this one is mine.

Or they should pull off a smarter move and trade the pick for a franchise d-man and a few other players. But, as we all know, the Oilers front office is full of empty-headed dumbasses and they'll probably draft McDavid or Eichel.

yeah it's a SUPER dumbass move to draft a generation player you realize they also have no centre depth right? and that the first thing you work on when building a team is the centre?

They could also try trading their 1st overall pick for multiple good defensemen (like almost all-star quality). But, as we all know, the Oilers front office is full of empty-headed dumbasses and they'll probably draft McDavid or Eichel. This is my siggy. There are many like it, but this one is mine.

If I'm at the front office in Edmonton I'd go for Hanifin. This is the draft were the Oilers can finally shape themselves, adding another forward no matter his skill doesn't matter when you have no defense.

It'd be interesting if the Oilers were to trade #1 pick for Arizona's 1st this and next year.

It would be stupid as hell to not draft Connor McDavid. You can pick up defensemen later, I'm sure the Oilers don't plan to be a playoff team for the next few years anyways.

but honestly as a GM, my personal philosophy is to draft the best player available, not the best player for the position you need most.

Then you'd fail as a GM This is my siggy. There are many like it, but this one is mine.

"Then you'd fail as a GM" Yeah, how? You pick the best player available. It's why the Panthers picked Barkov over Seth Jones.

maybe take a defensemen when there is no clear front runner, but that would just be stupid in this scenario.

"also you build from the back, goalie, defense, centres, wingers" uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh no lol. centre is literally the most important position in hockey the penguins were the NHL's most depleted roster, and they built from crosby out and look where they are now. if you have a generation player, you take him. simple as that

if you don't have a goalie you're probably not gonna do very well. on the penguins sure crosby is a fantastic player (probably the best in the world at the moment) but they've still got fleury, who is good until the playoffs. look at mtl, they were around 29th in shots against, but they were right at the top for gaa, price saved them. What they could do, is trade down to 2 or 3, but demand A TON, because so many teams think McDavid is amazing, they could easily trade down to #3, get Hanifin, and get a lot else for the #1 pick.

"if you don't have a goalie you're probably not gonna do very well." great thinking einstein "on the penguins sure crosby is a fantastic player (probably the best in the world at the moment) but they've still got fleury, who is good until the playoffs." crosby is more detrimental to that team's success than fleury is. they did not become good because of MAF "look at mtl, they were around 29th in shots against," you couldn't even get that right "but they were right at the top for gaa, price saved them." you do know that GAA is mainly based on how well the team in front of a goalie is doing, and not how the goalie himself is doing right?

Right, because they don't already have 2 highly touted young centers by the names of Ryan Nugent Hopkins and Leon Draisaitl, they need another one to actually be considered a good team! You honestly can't go wrong with either Mcdavid or Eichel, but the oilers are bad and that is because they are so terrible defensively. They clearly don't need another forward, but it doesn't hurt to have a generational talent player like these 2. The problem I see with trading for a franchise defenseman is who would be interested? I mean any team would love to get Mcdavid, but I don't know any team that has a franchise defenseman that would be willing to part with them to get Mcdavid or Eichel, especially if they're a playoff team. Only team that is rebuilding with a franchise defender would be Arizona with Ekman-Larsson and I'm pretty sure the Coyotes see him as the centerpiece of the team moving forward.

If I had been Panthers I would of drafted Jones. He is absolutely clutch and is a pro on stopping 2 on 1's and 1 on 1's. He also generates a good amount of points for playing a mix of 2nd and 3rd line D Butch Jones is the real Messiah

The 2014 Draft would have really helped Edmonton had they had the 1st Pick. /e Lockdown134

The one draft year the Oilers don't get the 1st pick is an OP defensemen that Edmonton really could have used.

Their timing for picks is terrible. 2013 draft, Seth Jones goes 4th overall, while Edmonton has 7th pick 2014 draft, Ekblad goes 1st overall, while Edmonton has 3rd pick (which if they had in 2013 they could have used to get Jones) 2015 draft, Oilers had 3rd overall pick originally (Hanifin ranked 3rd for this draft), they win draft lottery and get 1st pick (which they could've used last year to get Ekblad) It's almost as if the hockey gods don't want the Oilers to get a franchise defenseman. I think they're punishing them for not picking up Ryan Murray instead of Nail Yakupov in 2012 draft.

"Right, because they don't already have 2 highly touted young centers by the names of Ryan Nugent Hopkins and Leon Draisaitl," RNH is good what is draisaitl doing though? in his initial appearances he was terrible, and his CHL performance is pretty much the same from last year, except that he is on a better team now, so he may have actually gotten worse. plus how long is he going to be developing, and when he is developed, will he still be someone who is a #3 pick? if you believe draisaitl is on the level of mcdavid, you're dead wrong "they need another one to actually be considered a good team!" in case you didn't know, you should have four centres on an NHL team. the oilers currently only have one above average NHL centre. "You honestly can't go wrong with either Mcdavid or Eichel, but the oilers are bad and that is because they are so terrible defensively." one of those issues could be solved by an amazing two way player. hmmm i wonder if there are one of those in the draft (forwards also have to play defence too, you know) there's also this guy named darnell nurse in the CHL who is arriving next season "They clearly don't need another forward, but it doesn't hurt to have a generational talent player like these 2." "the oilers shouldn't draft mcdavid, but they should also draft mcdavid" buhhh "The problem I see with trading for a franchise defenseman is who would be interested? I mean any team would love to get Mcdavid, but I don't know any team that has a franchise defenseman that would be willing to part with them to get Mcdavid or Eichel," 1. pittsburgh would immediately forget who kris letang is if they could get connor mcdavid for him 2. you can get franchise defencemen easily in the NHL. you don't get connor mcdavid's easily in the NHL. 3. have you ever considered the possibility that edmonton drafts mcdavid and targets guys like mike green, cody franson, jeff petry, johnny oduya, kimmo timonen etc in free agency? you don't just build through the draft "especially if they're a playoff team. Only team that is rebuilding with a franchise defender would be Arizona with Ekman-Larsson and I'm pretty sure the Coyotes see him as the centerpiece of the team moving forward." good analysis why would anyone give up a generational player to draft a guy like hanifin, who might be good in two or three years
