tl;dr version: Spam has become an overwhelming epidemic. Render comments as images rather than text to reduce it.
To start off, if you haven't noticed the copious amounts of spam in Roblox game commentaries and Catolog item commentaries or if you think that spam isn't a problem you must live under a rock.
~~ The Problem ~~
I just looked at the commentary for litozinnamon's game 'Phantom Forces' and decided to count the amount of comments actually related to the game amongst the first 20 comments. Keep in mind that 'Phantom Forces' is a rather new game, so the spam hordes haven't quite overrun the commentary yet.
I counted 4 out of the top 20 comments had anything to do with the game. 80% of the commentary was spam.
Let's look at a more popular game. How about 'Murder Mystery 2' by Nikilis. I'm sure you've heard about this game before. The original was the first GMod Murder style game on Roblox. Let's count how many comments of the top 20 are related to the game.
This game had a whopping 1 out of the top 20 comments having anything to do with the game. 95% of the commentary was spam.
How about a Roblox hat? Let's go with the Classic Roblox Fedora! There wasn't a single comment in the top 20 that had anything to do with the hat. 100% of the commentary was either spam or "send me trades" comments (which count as spam by the way).
~~ The Solution ~~
There are many ways to fix this problem and reduce spam greatly. I'll start with the idea I had the would work the least well, then I'll post my best idea. If you have any other ideas, feel free to post them below.
Solution 1: Have something like a "commentary free week" where no game or item has a commentary.
- Pros: Roblox would be spam free for a week plus a few days. This would be less work for the Roblox staff than Solution 2 would.
- Cons: Extra website coding would have to be done. The spam would start up again, albeit slowly, afterwards. A lot of players would be pissed off that they couldn't comment on things.
- Conclusion: A "commentary free week" is probably not a good idea, it's more of a "do this when all else fails" solution.
Solution 2: Render comments as images rather than text.
- Pros: It would be impossible to copy and paste comments, reducing the "paste this on # games to get # robux" spam immensely due to the difficult process of spreading it manually.
- Cons: Extra website coding would have to be done. You could still manually type out spam that you see, but this would deter most new players who usually fall for spam.
- Conclusion: This is the best idea I've come up with and it would most definitely reduce spam to some degree. If Roblox were to do something about spam, I'd suggest trying this idea.

I support Solution #2. #1 is a horrible way to solve spamming, its like ignoring the comments for a week.
And for Solution #2, I think its genius. Now for the people that are confused, you don't comment pictures. Your comments TEXT are converted into pictures after you submit them. Thus making it something I like to call, "Finger Labor." Which requires you to type the spam yourself, instead of Copy/Paste.

Most captcha's aren't preset. In fact, you can even make a captcha generator with Visual Basic. It's not impossible. |
