Back in ROBLOX's early days, ROBLOX places had a wildly different lighting style. The way places were lit back then relied mainly on surrounding bricks. For example, if your place had a green baseplate, then a good amount of your surrounding bricks would have a green glow. This lighting style was toned down in 2008 (When I joined) and then completely vanished sometime after 2009.
If you are a newer user or you simply don't understand what I'm talking about, then maybe this comparison image could help.

As you can see, modern-day ROBLOX's lighting can be too plain and relies mostly on the skybox. It's a real shame to see the old lighting style go, as it really helped with a place's atmosphere sometimes. For example, a winter themed game with a lake could have a blue-ish glow, or a horror game with a dark red skybox and dark bricks can give off a scary vibe.
So I think that all ROBLOX users should have an option under Game Settings to turn on the old lighting for all games they visit. It should be called "Brick-dependent lighting" and it would have a check mark next to it.
On an unrelated note, users should also have an option to disable or enable outlines in games they visit. It should not just be a decision the developer makes. It should be every player's.
So, what do you guys think?

I remember it.
Of course if doesn't seem like it because this account was made in 2014, but I remember it because I have an account from 2009, a little before they removed that.
Not completely sure, but I think that's scriptable.

The way Humanoids made shadows was amazing ;_; |

You should've listened to what I said. It shouldn't be the game developer's decision whether their own place should have the old or new lighting. It should be everybody's personal decision. Like I said, it would be an option in the menu.

I know, I got that.
But regardless, it is scriptable.

@champion
Agreed, they used to be proper shadows instead of a circle below their feet. Speaking of that, I don't think regular bricks cast shadows anymore either.

It can be simulated if you play with the lighting colour. |
|
|
Yes, but still, you guys aren't getting the point.

I'm getting the point very well, I believe. It might not be obvious, but I'm from early '08. I didn't remember until I saw the screenshots of what it was like; and that is very easy to simulate by the dev if he plays with his OutdoorAmbient and his ShadowColor.
The other thing, wrt outlines, set your graphics to 1. |
|
|
But I'm saying that the users should have an option in the menu to turn it on for EVERY game they play. Not every developer would use this lighting feature, so users who would want this lighting back for every game they play wouldn't get to have it. Which is why I want it as a menu option, not as something a developer would use.

Sorry man, I don't support.
Roblox's a shared view system, meaning, if one person's views change in a game, everyone does. (With the exception of mobile version, which degrades models to enhance performance.)
If this was applied, roblox's game platform would have to be built from the ground up, it's way too much work. |

@thegass
Minecraft never had a problem with different people using different texture packs on the same server, and letting users pick their preferred lighting is a lot less severe than letting users pick their preferred textures.

it was good looking but not enough people remember or miss it for roblox to spend time re-adding it |
|
|
Also, we need to bring back the proper shadows. As seen in those screenshots, old ROBLOX bricks used to cast shadows on other bricks.

@fart
This is "Bring the old lighting back as an option", not "Get rid of every update after 2007".

Just because minecraft can do it, doesn't mean Roblox can. They are entirely different games. |

@vortex
I'm using Minecraft as an example. There are several other MMO games that have different texture or lighting style options and nobody ever gets confused about their point of view compared to other players.

Seriously, do I need to explain everything to you guys?

@RobloxRocks3376
This isn't minecraft.
Minecraft runs on a whole diffrent system and is vastly different from roblox.
Roblox is ALWAYS online, hence everything ingame runs on shared servers, thus meaning, if it has to do with the enviroment, everyone can see it.
It's impossible to do unless the whole roblox system is rebuilt.

|

Are you a moron? They didn't have to rebuild the entire system when you turn the graphics quality down in settings, did they? This is just a different way of lighting. I am not asking them to make the studs triangles.
