I decided to convert the water surrounding a large island for my game from a mesh to smooth terrain water. This has resulted in quite a lot of lag, as I now have about 38 million voxels, is that too much?

I've played games with 50+ million voxels. If you want to reduce the count hollow it out, and if you want to reduce the lag reduce the surface area

if you hollow it out there will probally be more lag as you now have caves filled with the shadow from voxels, and then you have faces to the terrain that you can't even see or even need to render.. i could be wrong but i could imagine no one has wasted hours on trying to hollow out the terrain (a large chunk not just a small chunk)

@charizard. ROBLOX uses a weird 200 stud (i think) square lighting. Anything beyond it's limit has no dynamic lighting at all.

yeah i know that, but i am saying why would anyone want to hollow terrain, when they are probally getting lag from the terrain, as i have no problems

0 voxels is best i remember the good ol days when we didn't have fancy voxels *old man yells at cloud*

I was wondering, they say at 10,000 parts is when you begin to have part lag, what would be the equivalent with these new smooth terrain voxels?

@golf I know that generating a new terrain map usually = about 5mil voxels. That equates to about a 15 second load-in time (for me, at least). That in it of itself is enough for a player to close the game of boredom. It's a harsh industry, we work in. Much love -GO

@ GreatOculus Thank you, I have been trying to surround my place with a smooth terrain mountain range but it probably would be too long of a load time to be worth it.

I've played a game with over 150m voxels with 10 graphics., But it depends on your Pc, Welcome to the forums, I'm here...

I tested my place that claims to have over 20m voxels and it only takes only a few seconds to load, but if I go onto someone else's game that has 20m voxels it takes awhile to load. How can this be?

Thanks, I've reduced lag quite a bit by removing as much terrain as possible. It's a shame users can't manually set the voxel size.
