however i doubt churchill would have let the colonies go so easily had he stayed prime minster instead of clement atlee taking his place
of course any attempt at fighting decolonisation would have been messy and ultimately unrewarding for britain so
labour probably wanted to lose the colonies more than the tories and this is shown by the tory government's actions in suez 1956 (which was britain's only really major attempt at fighting back and funnily enough this was also the date which people attribute to britain losing its superpower status)
therefore britain had no choice especially with pressure from the us. |
