It's probably because there's a small malformation in your knee tissue(cartilage, etc.) that forms a gas bubble when your knee is in one position and releases that gas when your knee moves. I have the same exact thing in my big toe, on the top-left side of the cartilage. Forms the gas bubble when I bend it down quickly, releases when I straighten. It's nothing to worry about, I've had a similar issue for years and other than the sound there's no symptoms.

If you live a sedentary lifestyle in which you lack adequate exercise to build muscle tissue around your joints, they will pop as they rub together. Muscle helps to pad the joints from wear and tear due to friction. Muscle can be rebuilt but bone/cartilage is not rebuilt.
