Overall: 8.5/10 Description: A good rap album by a great rapper. Filled with double meaning, that is mostly lost on me. What I like: The lyrics, while filled with the stereotypical rap elements of swearing and innuendo, contain much double meaning and deep messages. These elements may take a second listen or reading the lyrics in your head to make sense, but the messages are thought-provoking once discovered. I for one fell into the stereotype trap, but upon looking up the lyrics and giving the album a second listen, I understood it so much better. Another thing with the stereotypical rap elements in the lyrics is the fact that this album parodies the rap industry and Kendrick himself. Also, while the beats are not extremely complex, there is some interesting stuff going on there, like the saxophone playing, which I found extremely enjoyable. What I didn't like: Some of the lyrics just seemed rather stupid, though I am certain that there is a meaning behind them that I am not getting. Also, Dr. Dre's verse in one of the songs was rather weak compared to the rest of the material in my opinion. Lastly, and this is just preference, I really don't like Kendrick's voice. Would I recommend it: Yes, I would absolutely recommend this album and would go so far as to say it might be the best rap album of 2015. This is a profound and deep album once you get past the surface. If you are listening to this album, don't do what I did, don't get trapped into the stereotypical elements on the surface.

"Beats aren't complex"

I was saying that to mean: "while the beats are not complex or complicated, there is some cool stuff going on."

Like if u mean by time signature sure, but tpab could remove the vocals in most songs and it'd still be a good jazz album.

The saxophone by itself would be a good jazz album.

As for the beats, Kendrick collaborated heavily with Robert Glaser, Thundercat, and Terrance Martin, who all contribute to an emerging genre that combines elements of jazz, RnB, and Hip-Hop. If you like what you hear, you should check out Black Radio 1 and 2 by The Robert Glasper Experiment. Those albums are very similar to this new album, but less focused on rap. The more you know!

If you're incapable of grasping the concepts that were presented on that album, then it makes no sense to critique it. You might as well be a 10 year old trying to review Mural. As I read through this, you just seem like a pretentious child trying to imitate critics like Anthony Fantano or whatever Complex writer you can find that's actually somewhat knowledgeable about music. It's not hard to see that you have little to no idea what you're talking about.

Lol at 11 year old white kids who don't know what it's actually about. When you get pulled over and threatened to be killed by a white cop because your taillight is out, then you'll understand what it's about. But wait, you're white, so it looks like you'll never understand what it's about.

I feel TPAB meant how a Butterfly is naturally beautiful. Like the RAP art. But rappers nowaday try to "Pimp" it too much. Making it about gangs and guns. When K.Dot is showing us the Beauty of RAP. Not just the pimped side of it. Kendricks raps show us the butterfly. Other lyrics show us the Pimp.

^ Honestly I think Kendrick is a little overrated but yeah over the past 3 years rappers have just been rapping about meaningless stuff. If you wanna hear good rap music listen to curren$y's "even more saturday night car tunes" or even something older like bun b's album "trill".

I hope y'all know that I only reviewed this because someone requested for me to. I'm not a rap fan, but someone asked for me to review the album, so I listened to it and reviewed it.

"When you get pulled over and threatened to be killed by a white cop because your taillight is out, then you'll understand what it's about. But wait, you're white, so it looks like you'll never understand what it's about." whether or not you get harassed by the cops has way more to do with your social class oh wait you're probably some suburban black kid who acts oppressed even though they've had every opportunity. newsflash: poor whites are just as oppressed as poor blacks

^White people aren't poor, don't know where you got that from. I'm from a real hood in Sacramento. I live under the poverty line. Hmm, let me look around, no white people in my neighborhood!

"^White people aren't poor" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0kPTF8SFNiA that's why 9.4 % of whites are under the poverty line right? you really mean to tell me in a country of 300 million people there are no poor whites? oh but i'm sure your reasoning is "muh institutionalized racism" as you pull up to 7/11 with your EBT cards, free cell phone, and then drive off to your job that you got because of quotas "don't know where you got that from. I'm from a real hood in Sacramento. I live under the poverty line. Hmm, let me look around, no white people in my neighborhood!" yea i'm sure you really went outside and looked around instead of sitting on your chair well look if you're struggling then legit i'm sorry, but there are lots of whites in worse situations than you.
