I'm setting up a generic file storage server with some of my older PC parts. Should I use an old socket m478B Intel Celeron 2.4GHz setup with only two slow SATA ports, or should I use a newer 64-bit AMD Athlon X2 2GHz dual-core setup with a lot more SATA ports? I'm only using 2 HDDs right now, and I'm looking for the most efficient setup possible. I think that the Celeron (being from the Northwood family) will be the most quiet, as it has almost half the amount of TDP as the Athlon. It's not a PressHOT Pentium 4, by any means. It's also worth mentioning that both of these use the same DDR400 memory.

"so i suggest to get windows 8.1" Listen, I know you're not very tech-literate, but this thread is asking for suggestions regarding the PC hardware and not software. I would never use Windows for a server PC, let alone the Windows that I hate the most. Linux is the only answer in this situation.

Go for the Celeron, never really liked AMD CPUs running servers as Intel was reliable in my brother's eyes. Before our file server ran a Pentium D it had a Celeron, in it and never had issues.

Oh, I completely forgot about the Ethernet performance between the two. I'll go check it out.

By the way, my brother's file server has been down for the past few years because my brother messed up the Linux installation. Might get to fixing it at some point.

Also, the Celeron is a single-core 32-bit CPU that is much slower than the Athlon X2 that I own, which is a 64-bit CPU with two cores. It's just that the Celeron has much less heat output and barely uses up any energy.

A note to people posting random garbage here: You're not helping me and you're not helping yourself. Go do something more productive with your life. Chances are, if you're not experienced in this stuff, your advice will be far from useful.

i don't know much about servers in particular but the celeron should be fine for what your current setup is. like i said, if you expand and add more data/hdd's/whetever then switch to a better processor e = mcᵈᵒᵍᵉ

"like i said, if you expand and add more data/hdd's/whetever then switch to a better processor" Yeah, if I wanted to upgrade it, I would definitely change out the motherboard. And I would upgrade the CPU to a newer i3 or something.

"Thinking of possibly turning my closet into a server room now. Need to know what I have available though." You should definitely do it if you have a bunch of files that you'd like to easily access and keep safe.

I'll most likely be using the Western Digital 5400RPM 1TB drive that was given to me. Not sure of how healthy it is, let alone if it even works, but it should.

@You should definitely do it if you have a bunch of files that you'd like to easily access and keep safe. We already have a server in Stockholm. Not much purpose for this one other than bragging rights.
