If the game I created would be seeing an average of 50 online players, how great is the risk of invasion/exploitation if FE is disabled? |

Pretty small, though if you plan on getting more visits, you should enable Filtering. |

What are the possible negative outcomes of neglecting FE? |

Without FE on,
- Client has full ability to mess with the server (Destroy maps, values, just kill the game in general), with the exception of ServerStorage and ServerScriptService |
|
|
If your game is still in early development, I see no reason in disabling FE. It's indeed a bit harder to work with, but the benefits are definatly worth it. Not only because it protects from pretty much any hacker, but also because you can do awesome stuff on the client side with it.
There are actually scripts in free models that work like an anti-virus program, but for exploiters. Although, I wouldn't rely on these scripts as much as I'd rely on FE. |

I figured as much, just weighing the cost versus the benefit.
Thanks for input. |

If the benefit is having an actual playable game, the cost is relatively small.

Problem is I have to learn how to use RemoteEvents/RemoteFunctions. I've never been very handy with those. |
|
|
They're pretty easy to use
The hardest part about it is the syntax ('cause its like the only callback in Lua?!) but you can pretty much just copy it off the wiki
Then you just use it like anything else

In my opinion, writing without Filtering Enabled is considered a _bad_scripting/coding_practice_.
It keeps place visit count scalable in the event that you reach popularity. If not, you still learn about client-server functionality, which is the basics of networking. |

filteringenabled doesn't make your game any more secure unless you actually do the 'netcode' properly... for example, don't have a remote event like CreateItem because that's just stupid |
|
SoybeenJoin Date: 2010-02-17 Post Count: 21462 |
What do you mean by netcode?
|
|
SyndirJoin Date: 2014-07-21 Post Count: 143 |
netcode as in the remoteevents/functions sending between client and server. for example, if a game like WoW had a packet to send that creates an item in the inventory, the game would be ruined. instead, this should be handled on the server. |

Is there any place in particular I should be saving my RemoteEvents and RemoteFunctions? Will it vary, or will I typically have one location/dump for them all?
