what does an "englisher" do? nothing analyzing and analyzing and analyzing does nothing creating made up uses of "devices" and trying to find fake "hidden meanings" is pointless "standards" is just the government trying to justify why the class even exists

it makes decent money being an English professor considering the amount of work it requires you to do

A proper knowledge of the English language is needed for professionalism, writing reports, learning a foreign language, etc.

English is a useful skill for if you want to become an author, or want to apply for a job. Does OP have a brain stem? | +~4.5k | http://forum.roblox.com/Forum/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=184670792

"yeah because questioning pointless parts of the school system is only for rebellious middle schoolrs, am i rite??? :P dang you owned her!!" No, she's probably in seventh grade (like you) because she seems to think (like you) that we don't need to learn how to communicate properly in our native language. Screaming and throwing excrement around isn't a viable form of communication any more, tbh

@TheJohnSlaya You don't think it's necessary? Please direct your attention to the loud, obnoxious, and mostly-illiterate minorities around you. At least where I live, anyway.

"im not sure if writing research papers on hamlet is going to fix that, bub" I wish they'd do something to just remedy the kind of behavior that results in kids growing up only being able to say things like, "hit me up boi an' dow'load muh mixtape hue hue hue am i right, dawg hahaehawhahwhahaha didjoo see the game last night my boi". Granted that civilization has been around this long, it's pathetic to see people in first-world countries who are unable to speak their native language.

I'm with you on that, but I think that an English or speech class should be mandatory for kids like that. Other than that, I don't care too much. I mean, it's not like analyzing literature is difficult, and you still get credit for it.

However most people will be writing things for a good portion of their lives (jobs included). Above all, people need TO BE UNDERSTOOD. This requires knowing the finer points of grammar, spelling, punctuation, and the minimization of dialect in formal settings. Also of use is style and prose (which is STILL important in non-narrative writing). Literature can help for the latter two, but tbh your kind of idiot will probably not benefit the least from it because of your unnecessary belligerence to a system put in place to help you. I'm not saying the curriculum and style of teaching is perfect, I'm just saying that English is important too.

@bambamman I tutor these kids and I've seen them write essays. It's not a conscious choice for them.

@Bambamman I wouldn't know, considering I only tutor in math. I just happen to see the essays they write in other classes.

I agree. It could be replaced with something more important, which is even more annoying seeing as I'm only allowed seven classes on my schedule.
