Signing up for #UTOrientation tomorrow! Ah orientation, where I live on campus for 3 days over the summer (and can't leave) and get more acquainted to campus, spend some time at the School of Architecture, pick up my student ID, pick my classes and set out my degree plan with an advisor. And then of course chill during the evenings and make some friends at the dorms

Tbh I was honestly deciding on picking as many 8 AM and 9 AM classes as I could, more time to ## ######## ### ## Spend time in the architecture studio, study for other hard classes (as an architecture major I have to take a lot of calc & physics courses, and if I want to minor in business there's also that too), have any bit of free time I can to go work out or make friends, etc

^ luckily for me I only have to take physics (only have to take one "core" science) in college to satisfy my general education requirement, and then I can also take meteorology classes (I think there's a "weather and environment" class at UT so I'll take it)

If I got into Berkeley, I'm not sure if I would even go, honestly. I think I would definitely end up taking the opportunity, but in order to declare Computer Science as your major in the college of Letters & Science, you need a 3.3 GPA in really hard courses in your first 1-2 years to even be able to declare Computer Science as a major. You come in as "undeclared." For Berkeley, that's incredibly hard to do. Even though I am confident in my abilities if Berkeley were to accept me, it's a daunting task. Again...this is only if I get in lol, which is about a 20-25% chance according to L&S CS admission statistics

Dude if I got into UC Berkeley I would definitely go no questions asked. Yeah it's going to be a pain but life is going to be a pain so if you got the golden opportunity I would take it. I'm going to major in architecture and minor at business management at UT Austin; do you know how hard that is going to be? I've pretty much conceded that aside from sporting events and maybe a couple workout sessions a week that I'm going to have to give up any social life/free time

It's not the "hard" part. It's the part where you don't make the cutoff you're pretty much dead in the water. I would have to do something like major in cognitive sciences, which isn't terrible, but I would MUCH rather (at the moment) major in computer science

CS is a pretty good major with a good return. Well, if you want, I would imagine UC Davis is pretty good for it I imagine it's kinda like the UT Austin vs UT Dallas thing - Austin is much more of a pain in the hind side but Dallas is still a good school for comp sci

Too much hype for the big colleges. If I were in your situation Jimbo I'm choosing the college where there is no GPA cut off to declare your major. Never knew Berkeley did that but to me that itself is not worth it. Davis is just as far away and you're guranteed a major lol.

At the same time though I've gotta maintain a 3.3 for my scholarship so it's meh. Just think long and hard over the colleges that accept you instead of prestige. I could have easily gone to UCSD because it was the highest ranking one I got in, but I sat down and really thought about it. A lot of my kids had a UCLA hype and our valedictorian initially chose to go there, but took the time to decide and chose UCSB instead as he thought he'd be better there as a software engineering major + better scholarship as he got regency I believe.

While that is true, if I do make it out of that cutoff, the payoff at Berkeley will likely be higher than that of Davis (prestige, internships, connections, etc) but it's a 50/50 decision for me if I got into both. UCLA on the other hand...that would make things interesting. For god's sake though, I'm just hoping I get into Davis. I should get in, but you never know. You neeever know with the UCs.

Internships very situational. USF for example has 0 competition in San Francisco so we've got the whole field of play. Squik is an intern at city hall right now and that's a primetime position.

I'm hoping to intern with the Packers when I'm up at UWGB. Could be a good thing for me. Not sure what I could do but there is probably a lot out there.

You know how they say not to have any regrets in life? I regret applying to the University of Oregon and to Tulane University. Oregon because since I've been admitted and there's no way online to withdraw my application, they still send me emails and physical mail about sessions for incoming students and information about the university. Tulane because I will probably wait until April for a rejection (although the application was free so why not?) Not really any regrets but Texas Tech is so annoying I also sorta regret applying there because had I known I would've been admitted to Texas fully and partially to Texas A&M I would've never applied to Texas Tech
