"nobody expected them to even get out of the group stages" I did, and so did everyone who paid attention to qualifying. Hungary getting out of the group stage was a bigger surprise.

Iceland was expected to get out of the group stage like Cap said, but agreed, it's an amazing story that a country like Iceland formed a team that can compete in Europe.
