He told me to pick what I wanted to do and stick to it. He said the biggest regret of his life was not going to medical school. He had 6 friends growing up coming out of high school in Grenada and he is the only one who isn't a doctor. At the time they were growing up, there was a socialist revolution in the country (that the United States eventually quashed, cause you know, Cold War) and Cuba was offering a ton of aid to Grenada, including paying for education. Some of his friends took the offer. They all took jobs as chemistry teachers for a while to get some money, and then when the Cubans came calling, they took it. 3 of his friends went to medical school in Cuba, 1 went to New York, and he went to Houston for pharmacy school. Then he said as soon as he finished pharmacy school, in about 1998 he got an envelope from Grenada with an offer to go to medical school for free on the island. He wanted to do it, but my mom talked him out of it saying that it made no sense with kids and that he was just trying to follow his friends. He said he never should have listened to her. He said he loves biology and reading about the human body and says he considers that fun. He said pharmacy is boring and there's nothing challenging or exciting about it at all. He said not going to medical school was the biggest mistake of his life.

Sometimes it really is a necessity to ignore your parents.
